In the name of Allah, the most compassionate, most merciful
Yā Sīn!
By the Wise Quran,
you are indeed one of the apostles,
on a straight path.
[It is a scripture] sent down gradually from the All-mighty, the All-merciful
that you may warn a people whose fathers were not warned, so they are oblivious.
The word has certainly become due against most of them, so they will not have faith.
Indeed We have put iron collars around their necks, which are up to the chins, so their heads are upturned.
And We have put a barrier before them and a barrier behind them, then We have blind-folded them, so they do not see.
It is the same to them whether you warn them or do not warn them, they will not have faith.
You can only warn someone who follows the Reminder and fears the All-beneficent in secret; so give him the good news of forgiveness and a noble reward.
Indeed it is We who revive the dead and write what they have sent ahead and their effects [which they left behind], and We have figured everything in a manifest Imam.
Cite for them the example of the inhabitants of the town when the apostles came to it.
When We sent to them two [apostles], they impugned both of them. Then We reinforced them with a third, and they said, ‘We have indeed been sent to you.’
They said, ‘You are no other than human beings like us, and the All-beneficent has not sent down anything, and you are only lying.’
They said, ‘Our Lord knows that we have indeed been sent to you,
and our duty is only to communicate in clear terms.’
They said, ‘Indeed we take you for a bad omen. If you do not desist we will stone you, and surely a painful punishment will visit you from us.’
They said, ‘Your bad omens attend you. What! If you are admonished…. Indeed, you are an unrestrained lot.’
There came a man hurrying from the city outskirts. He said, ‘O my people! Follow the apostles!
Follow them who do not ask you any reward and they are rightly guided.
Why should I not worship Him who has originated me, and to whom you shall be brought back?
Shall I take gods besides Him? If the All-beneficent desired to cause me any distress, their intercession will not avail me in any way, nor will they rescue me.
Indeed, then I would be in manifest error.
Indeed I have faith in your Lord, so listen to me.’
He was told, ‘Enter paradise!’ He said, ‘Alas! Had my people only known
for what my Lord forgave me and made me one of the honoured ones!’
After him We did not send down on his people a host from the sky, nor We would have sent down.
It was but a single Cry, and, behold, they were stilled [like burnt ashes]!
How regrettable of the servants! There did not come to them any apostle but that they used to deride him.
Have they not regarded how many generations We have destroyed before them who will not come back to them?
And all of them will indeed be presented before Us.
A sign for them is the dead earth, which We revive and bring forth grain out of it, so they eat of it.
We make in it orchards of date palms and vines, and We cause springs to gush forth in it,
so that they may eat of its fruit and what their hands have cultivated. Will they not then give thanks?
Immaculate is He who has created all the kinds of what the earth grows, and of themselves, and of what they do not know.
A sign for them is the night, which We strip of daylight, and, behold, they find themselves in the dark!
The sun runs on to its place of rest: That is the ordaining of the All-mighty, the All-knowing.
As for the moon, We have ordained its phases, until it becomes like an old palm leaf.
Neither it behooves the sun to overtake the moon, nor may the night outrun the day, and each swims in an orbit.
A sign for them is that We carried their progeny in the laden ship,
and We have created for them what is similar to it, which they ride.
And if We like We drown them, whereat they have no one to call for help, nor are they rescued
except by a mercy from Us and for an enjoyment until some time.
And when they are told, ‘Beware of that which is before you and that which is behind you, so that you may receive [His] mercy…’
There does not come to them any sign from among the signs of their Lord but that they have been disregarding it.
When they are told, ‘Spend out of what Allah has provided you,’ the faithless say to the faithful, ‘Shall we feed [someone] whom Allah would feed, if He wished? You are only in manifest error.’
And they say, ‘When will this promise be fulfilled, should you be truthful?’
They do not await but a single Cry that will seize them as they wrangle.
Then they will not be able to make any will, nor will they return to their folks.
And when the Trumpet is blown, behold, there they will be, scrambling towards their Lord from their graves!
They will say, ‘Woe to us! Who raised us from our place of sleep?’ ‘This is what the All-beneficent had promised, and the apostles had spoken the truth!’
It will be but a single Cry, and, behold, they will all be presented before Us!
‘Today no soul will be wronged in the least, nor will you be requited except for what you used to do.’
Indeed today the inhabitants of paradise rejoice in their engagements
—they and their mates, reclining on couches in the shades.
There they have fruits, and they have whatever they want.
‘Peace!’—a watchword from the all-merciful Lord.
And ‘Get apart today, you guilty ones!’
‘Did I not exhort you, O children of Adam, saying, “Do not worship Satan. He is indeed your manifest enemy.
Worship Me. That is a straight path”?
Certainly, he has led astray many of your generations. Have you not exercised your reason?
This is the hell you had been promised!
Enter it today, because of what you used to deny.
Today We shall seal their mouths, and their hands shall speak to Us, and their feet shall bear witness concerning what they used to earn.’
Had We wished We would have blotted out their eyes: then, were they to advance towards the path, how would have they seen?
And had We wished We would have deformed them in their place; then they would neither have been able to move ahead nor to return.
And whomever We give a long life, We cause him to regress in creation. Then, will they not exercise their reason?
We did not teach him poetry, nor does it behoove him. This is just a reminder and a manifest Quran,
so that anyone who is alive may be warned, and that the word may come due against the faithless.
Have they not seen that We have created for them—of what Our hands have worked—cattle, so they have become their masters?
And We made them tractable for them; so some of them make their mounts and some of them they eat.
There are other benefits for them therein, and drinks. Will they not then give thanks?
They have taken gods besides Allah, [hoping] that they might be helped [by the fake deities].
[But] they cannot help them, while they [themselves] are an army mobilized for their defence.
So do not let their remarks grieve you. We indeed know whatever they hide and whatever they disclose.
Does not man see that We created him from a drop of [seminal] fluid, and, behold, he is an open contender!?
He draws comparisons for Us, and forgets his own creation. He says, ‘Who shall revive the bones when they have decayed?’
Say, ‘He will revive them who produced them the first time, and He has knowledge of all creation.
He, who made for you fire out of the green tree, and, behold, you light fire from it!
Is not He who created the heavens and the earth able to create the like of them? Yes indeed! He is the All-creator, the All-knowing.
All His command, when He wills something, is to say to it ‘Be,’ and it is.
So immaculate is He in whose hand is the dominion of all things, and to whom you shall be brought back.

Benefits of Reciting Surah Yasin
- According to the Prophet, whoever recites surah Yasin, it is as though they recited the entire Quran ten times. 1
- According to another report by the Prophet peace be upon him and his progeny, reciting surah Yasin has the following worldly benefits:
- If the person who recites it is hungry he will become full (he will find food).
- If he is thirsty, he will find water and satisfy his thirst.
- If he has no clothes, Allah will provide him with clothing.
- If he is single, Allah will pave the way for his marriage.
- If he fears something, his fear will subside.

- If he is a traveler, he will be assisted in his journey.
- If it is recited near a dead person, Allah will take it easy with him (i.e. the dead person)
- If he has lost someone, he will find his lost one. 2
Surah Yasin: God Addresses the Prophet
According to most Quranic exegetes, Yasin (یس) is one of the titles of Prophet Muhammad. Therefore, Allah in the first verse of this surah directly addresses the Prophet. The second verse swears by the Quran, and in the third verse, God says that verily you Prophet Muhammad are one of the apostles of God who is guided along a straight path. Then the Quran in verse five and six begins describing the Quran:
[It is a scripture] sent down gradually from the All-mighty, the All-merciful
that you may warn a people whose fathers were not warned, so they are oblivious.
Surah Yasin: The Disbelievers State
Surah Yasin goes on saying that the truth has been proven to most of the people of Prophet Muhammad, however, they did not believe:
The word has certainly become due against most of them, so they will not have faith.
Although they knew that the Prophet speaks words of truth, they refused to believe in him. Then the Quran says how they have iron collars on their necks and their heads are upturned. And, there is a barrier between them that does not allow them to accept the faith of Islam. Of course, they have free will but they chose not to believe in Islam. Therefore, God says:
It is the same to them whether you warn them or do not warn them, they will not have faith.
Who Should the Prophet Warn?
God says in surah Yasin that Prophet Muhammad should only warn those who believe in the Quran and fear Him:
You can only warn someone who follows the Reminder and fears the All-beneficent in secret; so give him the good news of forgiveness and a noble reward.
They will be rewarded and forgiven of their sins. The question however is: Why should people who believe in Islam and the Prophet be warned? The answer is simple. We as human beings, even if we are Muslims are forgetful sometimes and are negligent of remembering God at certain times. Therefore, the Prophet should come and warn the believers so that they always remember God and refrain from committing sins and perform their obligatory duties.
Surah Yasin: God Showcases His Might
In verse 12, God asserts that He and His angels are the ones who revive the dead and write their record of deeds and the impressions they leave behind. Finally it says:
And We have figured everything in a manifest Imam.
According to some Quranic exegetes, Imam in this verse is a knowledgeable man who is the leader of Muslims. Some exegetes say that the vicegerent of Prophet Muhammad, that is, his successor is the Imam to whom this verse refers.
The Example of the Inhabitants of the Town
From verse 13 of surah Yasin, God tells the story of the inhabitants of a town, which some say it was Antakya, when God’s apostles went to it. Quranic exegetes say that this event had taken place during the time of Prophet Jesus, the Messiah. Jesus sent apostles to a town in order for them to preach sermons to people, admonish them, and invite them to monotheism. First two apostles were sent, but they were falsified. Then a third one was sent in order to reinforce the two. However, the people of the town did not accept their call and said:
‘You are no other than human beings like us, and the All-beneficent has not sent down anything, and you are only lying.’
No matter how much the apostles told them that they are sent by God, they did not listen and instead said:
‘Indeed we take you for a bad omen. If you do not desist we will stone you, and surely a painful punishment will visit you from us.’
A Man Comes Hurriedly to Support the Apostles
Meanwhile, a man hurriedly came from the outskirts of the city and said:
There came a man hurrying from the city outskirts. He said, ‘O my people! Follow the apostles!
Follow them who do not ask you any reward and they are rightly guided.
Why should I not worship Him who has originated me, and to whom you shall be brought back?
Shall I take gods besides Him? If the All-beneficent desired to cause me any distress, their intercession will not avail me in any way, nor will they rescue me.
Indeed, then I would be in manifest error.
Indeed I have faith in your Lord, so listen to me.’
This man was a righteous man who had come to tell his people to follow the apostles. He had professed faith in God, not because he feared hell or was greedy for paradise, but rather he believed God deserved to be worshipped. That is why he was told:
He was told, ‘Enter paradise!’ He said, ‘Alas! Had my people only known
for what my Lord forgave me and made me one of the honoured ones!’
The People of the Town Are Punished
The people of the town were punished for impugning the apostles. The Quran says in this regard:
After him We did not send down on his people a host from the sky, nor We would have sent down.
It was but a single Cry, and, behold, they were stilled [like burnt ashes]!
The people of this town were punished just like the people of ‘Ād and Thamūd. Then the Quran says:
How regrettable of the servants! There did not come to them any apostle but that they used to deride him.
Have they not regarded how many generations We have destroyed before them who will not come back to them?
And all of them will indeed be presented before Us.
Surah Yasin: The Dead Earth
God tells us in the following verses of surah Yasin how he revives the dead earth:
A sign for them is the dead earth, which We revive and bring forth grain out of it, so they eat of it.
We make in it orchards of date palms and vines, and We cause springs to gush forth in it,
so that they may eat of its fruit and what their hands have cultivated. Will they not then give thanks?
Immaculate is He who has created all the kinds of what the earth grows, and of themselves, and of what they do not know.
The same way that God revives the dead on the Day of Judgment, He does so in this world, too. He causes the dead earth to revive and bring trees bearing fruit and vegetables that we eat from. This is the power and might of God Almighty, and it is a sign for all of us that the Resurrection is real.
Surah Yasin: More Signs of God
In the following verses of surah Yasin, God enumerates His signs such as the night when it strips the day, the sun that runs on to its resting place, the moon and its different phases, and how the sun and the moon and night and day do not overtake each other:
Neither it behooves the sun to overtake the moon, nor may the night outrun the day, and each swims in an orbit.
The above verse speaks about a scientific miracle of the Quran. No one at that time knew that the planets and stars move along an orbit. However, the Quran has made this fact clear that the sun and moon move along an orbit.
Surah Yasin: The Laden Ship
God says in surah Yasin:
A sign for them is that We carried their progeny in the laden ship,
It is one of the signs of God that He carries human beings in ships that sail the sea. Therefore, God is saying that no one protects them from the dangers of the sea and drowning other than God, because God has given man the knowledge of building strong ships that can sail the sea without drowning.
Human Beings Tend to Disregard Signs of God
God in the following verses of surah Yasin mentions other signs as well such as horses that man rides on. However, in the end God says:
There does not come to them any sign from among the signs of their Lord but that they have been disregarding it.
The human being is neglectful of the signs of God. He does not remember them and thus does not appreciate them. If he did, he would always remember God and be careful of his conduct. However, as the Quran says in many verses: The majority of human beings do not know:
But most people do not know. 3
Surah Yasin: Feeding the Poor
One of the duties God has charged us with is feeding the poor. God says in surah Yasin in this regard:
When they are told, ‘Spend out of what Allah has provided you,’ the faithless say to the faithful, ‘Shall we feed [someone] whom Allah would feed, if He wished? You are only in manifest error.’
The problem with the faithless is that they do not know that God has provided for them and if He wants he can take away everything from them and render them poor, too. When God tells us to give charity or feed the poor, it is because He wants to test us and see if we obey Him. Besides, God increases the sustenance and provision of the one who spends out of his wealth. Moreover, we human beings must be the manifestations of God’s mercy on earth, and when we feed the poor, it is just as if God has fed the poor. In this way, God will reward us even more.
Surah Yasin: God’s Promise
God has promised that a day will come when everyone will die when the Trumpet is blown, and everyone will be resurrected including the ones in the grave when the Trumpet is blown the second time:
And they say, ‘When will this promise be fulfilled, should you be truthful?’
They do not await but a single Cry that will seize them as they wrangle.
Then they will not be able to make any will, nor will they return to their folks.
And when the Trumpet is blown, behold, there they will be, scrambling towards their Lord from their graves!
On that day, everyone will be brought to account for the deeds they performed in the world. Justice will be administered and no one would be wronged in the least.
Surah Yasin: The Abode of the Righteous
The Quran describes the state of the Godwary in surah Yasin starting from verse 55:
Indeed today the inhabitants of paradise rejoice in their engagements
—they and their mates, reclining on couches in the shades.
There they have fruits, and they have whatever they want.
‘Peace!’—a watchword from the all-merciful Lord.
Those who are righteous do not need to worry. God will reward them with paradise with all its blessings and bounties. And, they will be safe from the fire.
Surah Yasin: The Fate of the Vicious
God in the next verses of surah Yasin censures the vicious and reminds them of His admonitions:
‘Did I not exhort you, O children of Adam, saying, “Do not worship Satan. He is indeed your manifest enemy.
Worship Me. That is a straight path”?
Certainly, he has led astray many of your generations. Have you not exercised your reason?
This is the hell you had been promised!
The inmates of hell used to obey and worship Satan and their carnal desires. God had warned them that Satan is their enemy. Therefore, now that they have been led astray by Satan, they shall enter hell:
Enter it today, because of what you used to deny.
Today We shall seal their mouths, and their hands shall speak to Us, and their feet shall bear witness concerning what they used to earn.’
Had We wished We would have blotted out their eyes: then, were they to advance towards the path, how would have they seen?
And had We wished We would have deformed them in their place; then they would neither have been able to move ahead nor to return.
Now that the Day of Judgment has come, they are helpless. They cannot ward off the punishment of God from themselves. Now is it too late. They had the chance to believe in God and repent while they were living in the world, but not now.
Surah Yasin: Old Age
God says in verse 68 of surah Yasin:
And whomever We give a long life, We cause him to regress in creation. Then, will they not exercise their reason?
All of us will one day become old, and when we do, our bodies will weaken. This is the will of God.
Surah Yasin: The Quran is not Poetry
In the next verses of surah Yasin, God makes it clear that the Quran is a Divine message that He revealed to His prophet, and not poetry:
We did not teach him poetry, nor does it behoove him. This is just a reminder and a manifest Quran,
so that anyone who is alive may be warned, and that the word may come due against the faithless.
Despite the fact that the Quran is very eloquent in speech, it is not poetry. In other words, the Quran’s worth is much higher than a piece of poetry, even though it has rhymes and elements that resemble poetry.
Surah Yasin: The Cattle Have Been Created for Us
God says in surah Yasin:
Have they not seen that We have created for them—of what Our hands have worked—cattle, so they have become their masters?
And We made them tractable for them; so some of them make their mounts and some of them they eat.
There are other benefits for them therein, and drinks. Will they not then give thanks?
Indeed, God has created many things just for us, including the cattle. God has given us control over them. We eat their meat, drink their milk, and ride some of them, yet we are neglectful of giving thanks to God for providing them for us.
Surah Yasin: Fake Gods
God continues surah Yasin by stating:
They have taken gods besides Allah, [hoping] that they might be helped [by the fake deities].
[But] they cannot help them, while they [themselves] are an army mobilized for their defence.
So do not let their remarks grieve you. We indeed know whatever they hide and whatever they disclose.
At the time of the Prophet, the people of Quraysh used to worship idols and gods other than Allah. However, God says that they will not benefit or harm them in any way as they are nothing but statues made of stone and clay. Then God sympathizes with His prophet and tells him that He knows what they hide and reveal.
Surah Yasin: The Creation of Man
God says in surah Yasin:
Does not man see that We created him from a drop of [seminal] fluid, and, behold, he is an open contender!?
He draws comparisons for Us, and forgets his own creation. He says, ‘Who shall revive the bones when they have decayed?’
Say, ‘He will revive them who produced them the first time, and He has knowledge of all creation.
He, who made for you fire out of the green tree, and, behold, you light fire from it!
Is not He who created the heavens and the earth able to create the like of them? Yes indeed! He is the All-creator, the All-knowing
All His command, when He wills something, is to say to it ‘Be,’ and it is.
So immaculate is He in whose hand is the dominion of all things, and to whom you shall be brought back.
God has created man from a drop of fluid that He himself placed in his loin. However, man gets arrogant and says: How is it possible for God to revive us when we are decayed bones? God’s answer is simple. He is the one who created him from the beginning and can easily bring him back to life. Then God gives the example of the green tree that fire can be lit from it.
He reminds us that He is the one who created the heavens and the earth, a creation that is more complex than the human being, why should He not be able to create something similar to it? In the end, God says He is capable of doing anything. All he says is be and it is created. The last verse of surah Yasin glorifies God and clears Him of any ill attributions and once again emphasizes that we will be returned to Him.
