What is Tajweed of the Quran?

Tajweed means “making something better or more beautiful.” In the Quranic context, Tajweed is learning the rules of recitation of the Quran so that one’s recitation becomes better, more appealing, fluent, and beautiful. There are certain Tajweed rules that one must learn so that one’s recitation reaches a higher standard. Some of these Tajweed rules are the places of articulation of letters, their characteristics, pronouncing letters thickly or thinly, and the rules of nūn sākinah and tanween. The Noble Prophet, Muhammad (PBUH) has emphasized the importance of reciting the Quran beautifully by saying:

زَيِّنُوا القرآنَ بأصواتِكم فَإِنَّ [اَلصَّوْتَ] اَلْحَسَنَ يَزِيدُ اَلْقُرْآنَ حُسْناً .

Adorn the Quran with your voices. Verily, a beautiful voice, adds to the beauty of the Quran. (‘Uyūn al-Akhbār, vol. 1, p. 49) One of the prerequisites of reciting the Quran with a good voice is mastering the Tajweed rules. A person who has a good voice but does not have good Tajweed is not a qualified reciter. As a result, the first step to reciting the Quran beautifully is learning all the Tajweed rules and implementing them in one’s recitation.

Tajweed is different from what you may think

There is a difference between knowing how to read the Quran and reading the Quran with Tajweed. Reading the Quran means knowing the basics of reading the Quran such as the 28 letters in the Arabic alphabet and the three short and long vowels. However, Tajweed is more advanced and has many more rules that increasingly beautify one’s recitation. Moreover, there is a difference between reciting the Quran melodiously and with Tajweed. The prerequisite for reciting the Quran melodiously is learning Tajweed. This course does not intend to teach melodious recitation of the Quran. However, courses on melodious recitation of the Quran may be offered in the future.

Is it obligatory for all Muslims to learn Tajweed and recite the Quran correctly?

Even though knowing Tajweed is not an obligatory duty of a Muslim, it is highly recommended for them to know Tajweed rules when reciting the Quran. The reward that one receives from reciting the Quran with Tajweed is unimaginable. Besides, the Quran is the holy scripture of Muslims, how is it possible for us not to know how to recite our own scripture correctly?

What are the prerequisites of learning Tajweed?

Before beginning to learn the Tajweed rules, one must know how to read the Quran in the most basic way. For example, one should know the 28 letters in the Arabic alphabet and the three short vowels and three long vowels. Moreover, one should have a basic idea of how the letters sound and how they interact with the vowels. After learning the basics of reading the Quran, the Quran learner can begin their journey to mastering Tajweed rules of the Quran. If you think you are not ready to learn Tajweed rules yet, we suggest that you enroll in our “How to Read the Quran” course.

What will you learn in our Tajweed course?

Learning Tajweed is very similar to learning phonetics of other languages. For example, one of the things that one will learn is the places of articulation of letters in terms of how they should sound and which part of the speech device is used to produce their sounds. Some other Tajweed rules include:
  1. characteristics of letters
  2. thickness and thinness of letters
  3. rules of the unvowelled nūn and mīm
  4. ghunnah (nasalization)
  5. the qalqalah mechanism
  6. the lengthening and shortening of long vowels
Of course, these rules will be explained in a simple and step-by-step fashion with many examples to help the learner internalize them and implement them in their recitation.
