Duas in the Month of Ramadan 2025

0 14

A human being who doesn’t say prayers to God is miserable. We are alive, successful, wealthy, healthy, and happy because of our prayers and supplications. A person who doesn’t supplicate Allah is doomed to fail in life. Even if we think we can do whatever we want and easily fulfill our needs, we must still supplicate Allah and request our needs from Him. If the whole world fails you, Allah won’t. In this article on Islam4u, we will explore the duas that are good to be made during Ramadan 2025.

The Dua of Entering Ramadan

We can recite abundant duas for different purposes in Ramadan 2025. One of them is the dua of entering and welcoming the month of Ramadan. It is supplication 44 of Sahifa al-Sajjadiya by Imam Sajjad (a) . This dua is rather long but has lofty themes.

Let us go over a few passages of this beautiful supplication.

“And praise belongs to God who appointed among those roads His month, the month of Ramadan.”

These roads are the roads toward Allah that have been described in the Quran as well:

And why should we not put our trust in Allah, seeing that He has guided us in our ways?

There are different paths toward Allah. Some are closer, some are farther. Some are through prayer and supplication; some are through other means, such as dhikr, contemplation, charity, and finally, Ramadan’s acts of worship, including fasting, the significance of which we discussed. However, what matters is that they must lead us to the straight path; to Allah, whom we request to guide us along that path in Surah Fatiha. One of the best ways of achieving divine proximity is reciting the duas of Ramadan.

“The month of fasting, the month of submission, the month of purity.”

Ramadan is a month of purity, sincerity, submission to Allah, and self-improvement. It is superior to all other lunar months.

“The month of putting to test, the month of standing in prayer.”

We are thoroughly tested in Ramadan. Allah wants to see whether we fast correctly, pray on time and with concentration, and avoid all sins.

“[The month] in which the Qur’an was sent down as guidance to the people.”

This part of the dua is an excerpt from the Quran, verse 185 of Surah Baqarah. The greatest occasion of Ramadan is the revelation of the Quran, which is a means of guidance for everyone.

“And as clear signs of the Guidance and the Separator.”

This verse continues the one mentioned in the previous passage. The Quran guides us to the truth and helps us discern right from wrong.

The Post-Prayer Duas in Ramadan 2025

The obligatory prayers typically have certain supplications that are recited after them, known as ta‘qībāt, or post-prayer supplications. They are not confined to specific months. However, Ramadan has unique post-prayer supplications, and reciting them is highly recommended. Three of them are more popular than the others. After ending each prayer, one can recite one, two, or all three.

The most famous one reads:

“O Exalted! O Great! O Forgiving! O Merciful! You are the Lord, the Great, for whom there is nothing like Him, and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Seeing. This is a month which You have magnified, honored, glorified, and preferred over all other months. It is the month in which You have enjoined fasting upon me. It is the month of Ramadan, in which You sent down the Qur’an as a guidance for people, with clear proofs of guidance and the Criterion. You have placed in it the Night of Decree (Laylat al-Qadr), and You have made it better than a thousand months. So, O Possessor of favors, whom no one can oblige, grant me the release of my neck from the Fire among those whom You favor, and admit me into Paradise through Your mercy, O Most Merciful of the Merciful.”

Another well-known supplication recited after each obligatory prayer is the following:

“O Allah, bring joy to the inhabitants of the graves. O Allah, enrich every poor person. O Allah, satisfy every hungry person. O Allah, clothe every unclothed person. O Allah, pay the debt of every debtor. O Allah, relieve every distressed person. O Allah, return every traveler. O Allah, free every captive. O Allah, mend all that is corrupt in the affairs of the Muslims. O Allah, heal every sick person. O Allah, fulfill our needs through Your wealth. O Allah, change our unfavorable condition into a good one through Your excellent state. O Allah, settle our debts and free us from poverty. Indeed, You have power over all things.”

The third post-prayer supplication good to recite after each obligatory prayer reads:

“O Allah, Lord of the month of Ramadan, in which You sent down the Qur’an and made fasting obligatory upon Your servants, send blessings upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad. Grant me the provision to perform the Hajj to Your Sacred House this year and every year. Forgive me those great sins, for none can forgive them except You, O Most Merciful, O All-Knowing.”

These supplications are very comprehensive, and by reciting them, we request Allah for the most urgent necessities, including entry to paradise, divine pleasure, wealth, food for the hungry, freedom of prisoners, and a better life in general.

If we don’t recite these supplications, we miss out on the most significant rewards of Ramadan.

If you want to improve yourself and change your life during Ramadan 2025, it would be wonderful if you could recite the specific duas of the nights of Ramadan. Perhaps you’ve never recited them before. Ramadan 2025 is a good start. Undoubtedly, the most well-known and recommended supplication that is recited during the nights of Ramadan and usually after iftar is Dua al-Iftitah (الإفتتاح), which means the supplication of opening or beginning. The opening could have many meanings. It could mean opening the doors of Allah’s mercy and opening one’s fast, an Arabic expression that means breaking one’s fast. However, if we look at the dua itself, it begins by saying:

“O Allah, I begin (open this dua by) glorifying You with Your praise.”

Therefore, this dua has been given this name because of its first passage, which is quite sublime. This dua is quite long. Thus, let us look at the first section of this powerful dua:

“O Allah, I begin glorifying You with Your praise. You direct toward the truth through Your favor. I am certain that You are the Most Merciful among those who show mercy in the position of forgiveness and mercy, and the most severe in punishment in the position of retribution and vengeance, and the greatest in magnificence in the position of pride and greatness.”

The Pre-Dawn Duas in Ramadan 2025

We Muslims wake up a few hours before dawn adhan and have a meal known as suhur or the pre-dawn meal. However, did you know there are also specific supplications for this spiritual moment? The most obvious one is Dua Sahar, meaning “The Pre-Dawn Supplication.”

Now, the reward for reciting this supplication is immense. So why not recite it before eating suhur? Here is an excerpt of this heartfelt dua:

O Allah, I ask You by the most splendid of Your splendor, and all of Your splendor is splendid. O Allah, I ask You by all of Your splendor.
O Allah, I ask You by the most beautiful of Your beauty, and all of Your beauty is beautiful. O Allah, I ask You by all of Your beauty.
O Allah, I ask You by the most majestic of Your majesty, and all of Your majesty is majestic. O Allah, I ask You by all of Your majesty.
O Allah, I ask You by the greatest of Your greatness, and all of Your greatness is great. O Allah, I ask You by all of Your greatness.

The Dua of Abu Hamza Thumālī: One of the Duas of the Nights of Ramadan

This is one of the most fervent and virtuous duas of not only Ramadan but the entire Islamic dua repertoire. It contains incredibly lofty themes. Imam Zayn al-‘Abidin (a) narrated this dua to one of his most devout companions, Abu Hamza Thumālī. The things said to Allah about the supplicant’s helplessness before Allah and their need for Him go beyond imagination.

Here are some excerpts of this fervent dua.

Excerpt 1

“O Allah, make us among the people of joy without punishment, without being veiled from Your mercy, without being wretched or deprived.”

Feelings of joy that do not have the above conditions are undesirable. Only joys Allah allows, approves, and is pleased with are valuable.

Excerpt 2

“My God, even if I had a lifetime to complete and a portion of fortune to perfect, I would not attain anything but Your grace!”

Imam Zayn al-‘Abidin (a) shows the magnitude of Allah’s grace and how it is the most precious thing one could ever acquire.

Excerpt 3

“My God, Your forgiveness is wider than my sin, and Your mercy is more hopeful than my deeds.”

This passage reflects the universal and all-encompassing mercy of Allah. If a person has committed millions of sins, it is nothing next to the vastness of Allah’s forgivingness and mercy.

Excerpt 4

“My God, we have not worshipped You as You deserve to be worshipped, nor thanked You as You deserve to be thanked, but You are the Generous Allah, whose favors cannot be counted!”

Allah’s generosity, mercy, and compassion are so great that no one can entirely thank Him. Yet, His favors are innumerable.

Dua Jawshan al-Kabīr: An Exclusive Dua for Ramadan

Jawshan means armor, and kabīr means greater. In fact, we have two duas with this name, Dua Jawshan al-Ṣaghīr and Dua Jawshan al-Kabīr, meaning the supplication of the lesser armor and the greater armor, respectively. Dua Jawshan al-Kabir is a long dua that enumerates a thousand attributes of Allah. This dua is recited during the nights of Qadr, meaning the eve of Ramadan’s  19th, 21st, and 23rd. The attributes are recited in one hundred sections, each mentioning ten of Allah’s attributes, making it a total of a thousand attributes. After each section, a refrain is recited:

Glory be to You! There is no god but You. Help! Help! Save us from the Fire, O Lord!

Let us go over three passages of this heartfelt supplication.

Passage 1

O Allah! I ask You by Your name: O Allah, O Merciful, O Compassionate, O Generous, O Sustainer, O Mighty, O Eternal, O All-Knowing, O Forbearing, O Wise.

As you can see, in this section, ten attributes of Allah are mentioned. These attributes are universally known. For example, Allah is the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate, the Most Generous, the Sustainer of all beings, the Most Mighty, the Eternal who has always lived and will never die, the forbearing one who doesn’t immediately punish His servants when they sin, and the Wise who has placed everything in the right place.

Passage 2

O He who forgives those who disobey Him, O He who gives respite to those who anger Him, O He who conceals the faults of those who sin, O He who bestows blessings on those who do not deserve them, O He who does not punish for small mistakes, O He who does not tear away the covering (of faults), O Possessor of great pardon, O Excellent in forgiveness, O Vast in mercy, O Extender of hands in mercy.

This is a lovely passage. Unlike the first one, which was very general, this passage details Allah’s attributes. He forgives those who disobey Him if they repent. He gives those who anger Him time to reform themselves and please Him. If someone sins, He does not expose them to others and doesn’t embarrass them. Allah is the one who gives blessings to one and all, whether they’re good or bad. Allah does not punish believers for the small mistakes they make. He does not reveal the shameful misdeeds of His servants, not to disgrace them. These attributes show how compassionate, forgiving, and generous Allah is.

Passage 3

O Most Generous of those who are asked, O Best of those who are sought, O Most Merciful of those whose mercy is sought, O Most Excellent of those who give, O Greatest of those to whom judgment is referred, O He who has the highest example, O He who has the highest attributes, O He who has the Most Beautiful Names, O He who has the highest dominion, O He who owns the Hereafter and the first life.

This passage showcases Allah’s superiority in all good qualities. If there are people in this world who are very generous in fulfilling the needs of those who ask for them, Allah is much more generous than them. This passage shows that Allah has created some of his servants among humankind who are generous, merciful, good at making judgments, a good example to follow, and so on. However, they are His creation and the means to Him. He is above all of His creation.

Conclusion

Ramadan 2025 should be a month when we supplicate, pray, and invoke Allah with all our hearts and souls. There are abundant duas that can be recited in Ramadan that bring us closer to Allah. We should not waste time doing other fruitless activities and make the most of our time by reciting these supplications to the best of our ability and as much as we can. If we can’t recite the Dua of Abu Hamza Thumālī, we can at least recite the post-prayer supplications. If we are not consistently reciting the Dua of Iftitah every night, we must commit ourselves to reciting Dua Jawshan al-Kabīr during the nights of Qadr. Ultimately, the more we supplicate Allah this month, the better status and rewards we will have in both worlds.
