The Viscosity of Liquids: A Testament to the Miracle of the Quran
1400 years ago, people knew that honey was a very viscous and sticky substance, but they couldn’t determine which of the liquids like water, wine or milk had the most viscosity. However, the Quran revealed this centuries before science could.
Viscosity, or stickiness, is a property of fluids (liquids or gases) that describes their resistance to flow. For example, honey is more viscous than milk and flows more slowly. Resistance occurs when there is relative motion between the layers of a fluid. In other words, viscosity can be defined as the internal friction between the layers of a fluid. This quantity is affected by temperature; as the temperature increases, the viscosity decreases, and as the temperature decreases, the viscosity increases.
According to current scientific knowledge, water has the lowest viscosity, followed by milk, wine, and finally honey. Scientists have only recently discovered this. But the interesting point is that in the Quran, 1400 years ago, this order of viscosity of liquids is mentioned in the description of Paradise. Where it says:
“The example of Paradise, which the righteous are promised, is that in it are rivers of water unaltered, rivers of milk the taste of which never changes, rivers of wine delicious to those who drink, and rivers of purified honey, in which they will have from all [kinds of] fruits and forgiveness from their Lord, like [that of] those who abide eternally in the Fire and are given to drink scalding water that will sever their intestines?” (Quran, 47:15)
As you can see in this verse, it is stated that in Paradise there are rivers of water, milk, wine and honey. Since rivers flow, they are liquid. But with a little contemplation and attention to the verse, it becomes clear that the order of these liquids in the word of God is exactly in accordance with the order of their viscosity from least to greatest. That is, first water, which has the lowest viscosity, then milk, then wine, and finally honey!
Those who believe that the Quran was created and fabricated by the Prophet of Islam (peace be upon him) must answer this question: How is it possible that an illiterate man 1400 years ago was aware of the viscosity of liquids?
