Many people want their child to be of a specific gender. For example, those who already have a boy might want a girl as their next baby and vice versa. Allah says in the Quran that He is the one who gives only boys, only girls, or both boys and girls to His servants.1 In this article on Islam4u.pro, we will analyze whether there is a way of determining the gender of your baby through various means and how to be blessed with a baby boy or girl.
What Does the Quran Say About Being Blessed With a Baby Boy or Girl?
In the first verse of Surah Nisa’ of the Noble Quran, the issue of male and female children being born from a single soul [here soul means essence or matter] has been mentioned:
O People! Be fearful of your Lord who created you from a single soul and created its mate from it, and from them [created and] scattered many men and women on earth. 2
As for how they multiplied and how Adam’s children got married, there is a difference of opinion among exegetes. The most acceptable account is that even before the creation of Adam, and Allah making him a vicegerent on earth, there was a generation of human beings living on earth. When Allah created Adam in the Garden of Eden, He also created a mate for him, Eve. When they descended to earth, their two sons Abel and Cain married the human beings who were already living there. In this way, the human race multiplied. In addition, another narration says, Allah created four human beings: Adam, Eve, and another couple. The children of Adam married the children of the other two human beings and in this way, the human race multiplied. This was because incest has always been evil in the view of Allah.

Allah Gives Boys or Girls to Whomever He Wishes
In two other verses of the Quran, Allah explains how He blesses people with either boys or girls, sometimes both, and sometimes makes certain people infertile, meaning they are left childless:
The sovereignty of the heavens and the earth belongs to God. He creates whatever He desires, [so] He grants a female [child] to whomever He desires and He grants a male [child] to whomever He desires.
Or He couples males and females and makes whomever He desires to be infertile. Indeed, He is All-Knowing, All-powerful. 3

Verses of Surah Anbiya and Al-i ‘Imran for a Baby Boy
Generally speaking, it is best to leave the decision of having a male or female child to Allah, as He knows what is in our best interest. Nevertheless, one could still recite certain verses of the Quran to be blessed with either a boy or girl. For example, Reciting verse 89 of Surah Anbiya three times after every obligatory prayer has been said to bless the reciter with a child:
“O my Lord! Do not leave me alone and you are the best of the inheritors.” 4
Moreover, those who have difficulty conceiving a child can recite the following verse as many times as possible:
“My Lord! Bestow upon me a good child; Indeed, you hear all prayers.” 5
In fact, the two above verses are the supplications of Prophet Zechariah (Zakariyya) for having a son who would succeed him. Allah answered his prayer and granted him John. These verses are especially beneficial for being blessed with a baby boy but also work for a girl depending on one’s intention.
Surahs to Recite for a Baby Girl
The narrations have not mentioned a specific surah for one to recite to be blessed with a baby girl. Some say reciting surah Maryam a lot is good and effective in being blessed with a baby girl, however, narrations have not spoken anything in this regard. Nevertheless, we can hope that by reciting this surah which is attributed to Lady Mary, one would be blessed with a baby girl. On the other hand, there are some supplications or dua (دعاء) that can be effective for being blessed with a baby girl. Here is one of them:

What Do Science and Islamic Medicine Say About Being Blessed With a Baby Boy or Girl?
Generally speaking, a boy or girl is made when either a sperm carrying the X chromosome or Y chromosome of a man joins with an ovum of a woman who carries two X chromosomes. Therefore, the combination of X and Y chromosomes makes a male while the combination of two X chromosomes makes a female. During the process of intercourse and after the man has released his semen into the womb of a woman, the sperm cells swim to reach the fallopian tube.
A healthy male releases 200-500 million sperm during ejaculation. Most of the sperm are male. Male sperms are faster swimmers than female ones, but female sperms compensate for this weakness by being stronger and being able to live longer.
What Does Science Say About Having a Boy or Girl?
According to science, although it is the man who determines the gender of the baby, the woman also plays a role as she is the one who provides the necessary environment for the sperm to live in the womb and join with an egg cell. To explain, the pH level of the woman’s uterus is a contributory factor in whether the baby is a boy or girl. If the environment is alkaline, the male sperms have a better chance to succeed and fertilize an egg. However, if the environment of the uterus is acidic, the male sperm do not stand a chance and will die whereas the female sperm are able to survive.
The pH of the Environment
If one really wants to have either a baby boy or a girl, it is important to know a thing or two about ovulation. Ovulation is when the female individual releases one or a few eggs from her ovaries about in the middle of her monthly cycle. However, ovulation can occur at different times from one person to another. Nevertheless, it has certain symptoms such as higher basal body temperature especially in the morning, acute sense of smell, pain in the lower abdomen, and others.
Generally, the pH of the uterus is acidic about two to three days before ovulation and alkaline during ovulation. Moreover, if a woman reaches orgasm during intercourse, an alkaline fluid is released from her that increases the chances of a male sperm making its way to the fallopian tube. Therefore, if one takes ovulation into consideration and the days prior to it, and the day it occurs, one may be able to determine the gender of one’s child. However, we should remember that everything is in Allah’s control and sometimes things might not go the way we expect due to various other factors. So we should give thanks to Allah for whatever gender our baby is.
How to Be Blessed With a Baby Boy or Girl: What Does Islamic Medicine Say in This Regard
Islamic medicine says eating certain food is good for having a girl and eating certain food is good for having a boy. For example, it says eating dates, saffron, and lettuce is good for having a boy, and dairy products, eggs, and sour preservatives are good for having a girl. Modern medicine also confirms this. The idea is that for having a boy, the woman must consume foods that are high in sodium and potassium (e.g. meat, fruits, certain vegetables, etc.) which raise the pH of the uterus, while for having a girl she must consume foods that are high in calcium and magnesium (e.g. chocolate, coffee, ice cream, dairy, etc.) which lower the pH of the uterus.
Another method that Islamic medicine has determined for facilitating the conception of a boy or girl, is using apple cider vinegar diluted with water to wash the inside of the female reproductive organ for having a girl, and a mixture of baking soda and water for having a boy.
What If You Only Have Boys or Girls and Not Both?
If you are noticing that no matter how many children you have they all become either girls or boys, it may be that Allah sees it in your best interest for you to have only one of the two genders. Our Prophet and Imams have told us that we must not insist too much on having a child of different gender in such conditions.
For example, a man prayed to Allah and insisted on having a boy when he only had girls. A boy was born from his wife eventually who was disabled. Would you rather have healthy children that are either all girls or boys or a child of a different gender that is disabled? Allah knows what is in our best interests when He gives us children.
However, this does not mean you should not try the above methods. You should try the above methods and pray to Allah to give you a healthy and righteous child of your desired gender. If all else fails, that is when we must simply surrender to Allah’s will. In addition, remember that these are all scientific theories that scientists may refute later on.
