Surah Al-Ahqaf Verse 35 [46:35]

Have patience as the Ulul al-‘Azm1 among the messengers exercised patience and do not seek to hasten [ the punishment] for them. When they will see what they are promised, [they will see that the life of the world passed soon] as though they had stayed an hour of a day [in the world]. This is an announcement. Will anyone, but the transgressors be destroyed?

Commentary Surah Al-Ahqaf Verse 35 [46:35]

1. This verse commands and guides Muhammad[s] to exercise patience as the greatest messengers who were resolute, The Ulul al-‘Azm. The Ulul al-‘Azm messengers are five messengers: Muhammad [s], Noah, Abraham, Moses and Jesus2. Muhammad [s] is of the Ulul‘azam and the best of them. All the messengers are infallible and in the high level of spirituality and knowledge in other words all of the messengers are chosen by God and are the best but the degree of their determinations even though have divine standard as a chosen messenger but differ with the other messengers. Ulul‘azm are the five aforementioned messengers among the 124000 messengers sent to mankind and Muhammad[s] is above than all and God perfected His religion by sending the Muhammad. God commands him to be as they were. It is worth mentioning that all of these messengers are brother in religion and they have been commanded by God, so all of them confirm the others.

2. The other teaching of this verse discloses that the disbelievers certainly will receive the divine punishment even though they deny it, so when they face their punishment and leave the world they will find that they committed a grave mistake because the time of world passes soon as if they were only an hour in the world, therefore, the messenger should not ask God to punish them sooner than their specified time.

3. The third teachings of the verse is that God only will destroy the transgressors who knowingly neglect and disregard His teachings.

  1. The Resolute. The Ulul al-‘Azm messengers are the most prominent messengers of God who did not lack determination at all. They are five messengers including Noah, Abraham, Moses, Jesus and Muhammad (peace be all of them). It is worth mentioning that all of God’s messengers have been chosen by God and they were qualified to act as God messenger, so they were infallible and the best servants but the Ulul al-‘Azm messengers are the best of the best due to their outstanding levels of determination.
