In the name of Allah, the most compassionate, most merciful
All praise be to God, Who has created the heavens and the earth and has made darkness and light, [but] those who disbelieved ascribe equals to their Lord.
He is [God] who has created you out of clay, then He has fixed a term [of your life] and [the knowledge of] the specified time is with Him. Yet you are doubtful.
And He is God [the Lord] in the heaven and the earth Who knows your secrets and what you make public, and He knows what you earn.
[When] any sign of the signs of their Lord come to them they turned away [and disregarded] it.
Indeed, they denied truth when it came to them. Therefore, they will receive the news [and consequences] of what they used to deny.
Have they not considered that We have destroyed many generations [due to their sins] before them, whom We had established on the earth [and provided them with excellent facilities] in a way that We have not established you. And We made rain pour down from the sky upon them and rivers flow through their lands, [but they disobeyed and corrupted], so We destroyed them because of their sins and then We created another generation [to test].
And even if We had sent down to you a book written in paper, so they could touch it with their hands, those who disbelieve would have said that this is only an obvious magic.
And they said, “Why hasn’t an angel been sent down to him1.” [But they should know that] if We had sent down an angel, the matter [of their testing] would have been ended, and then they would have been given no respite [to live].
And if We had made him2 an angel We should have made him a man [that they could communicate with him], and We would have obscured the truth for them [because of their disobedience], as it seems obscure [now].
And indeed, the messengers [who lived] before you were mocked. Those who treated them with ridicule were surrounded [and destroyed] by that which they ridiculed.
Say [to the believer], “Travel in the land and observe how was the fate of the deniers.”
Say, “to whom belongs whatever exists in the heaven and the earth?” say, “It belongs to God [who has] prescribed for Himself mercy. He will certainly gather you on the Day of Judgment which is beyond doubt. [But] those who ruined their souls, they do not believe [in the Day of Judgment].”
And whatever exists in the night and the day belongs to Him, and He is All-Hearing, All-Knowing.
Say [to the polytheists],” Shall I follow the master other than God, the Originator of the heavens and the earth, and He feeds and is not fed?” Say, “I have been commanded to be the first one who is submissive to Him. And [He has told,] “Do not be of the polytheists.”
Say, “Indeed, I am fearful of the punishment of the fateful Day, if I disobey my Lord.”
Those who are spared [from punishment] on that Day [are those on whom God] has shown His mercy, and it is a clear victory.
And if God harms you, then no one can keep you [safe] from it but Himself, and if He provides you with goodness [no one can stop it from happening], He is able to do all things.
And He is omnipotent over His servants, and He is All-Wise, AllKnowing.
Say, “What thing gives the greatest testimony1? Say [to them],” God is [the All Reliable] witness between you and me, [because He sees best]. And this Qur’ān has been sent down to me to warn you and whoever it may reach. Do you [wrongfully] testify that there are gods beside Allah?” Say, “No! I do not bear such witness”. [And I] Say, “Indeed He is the One God, so I abandon what you ascribe to Him.”
[The scholars of Jews] to whom We have given Book recognize it [as they recognize] their own son, [but they give false reasons to deny it, so you should know that] those [wrongdoers who] ruined their soul do not believe.
And who commits greater wrong deed than he who lies against God or denies His signs. Indeed, the wrongdoers will not prosper.
And that [Fateful] Day [certainly comes when] We will gather all of them and We will say to those who ascribe partners to Him, “Where are those partners whom you used to imagine?”
Then only their pretext is to say, “[We swear] by God, Our Lord, that we are not polytheists.”
Look [to see] how they used to fabricate lie against themselves and that which they used fabricate went away from them, [so, they remained helpless]!
And some of them who listen to you [but turn a deaf ear to it, so] We have placed on their hearts veils lest they understand it, and on their ears deafness [due to their disobediences lest they find its truthfulness]. If they see all the signs, they will not believe in it, even when they come to you to argue against you, those who disbelieve say, “These are only the old myths.”
And they prevent [people] from [following] him and they stay away from him, and they only ruin their souls, but they are not aware.
And if you could see [them] when they will be made to stay before the fire, and they will say, “If we could return [to the life of the world], we would not deny the signs of our Lord, and [we would] be of the believers”.
No! What they used to conceal [of their intention] has become evident to them; and if they were to return [to the world], they will commit the things which they were forbidden. Indeed, they are liars.
And they say, “There is no other life except the life of this world and we will not be resurrected.”
And if you see [them] when they will be made to stand before their Lord [on the Day of Judgment]! He will say, “Is this not true?” they will reply, “By our Lord, [it is true]” say, “Taste the punishment because you disbelieved [in God and were corrupt]”
Indeed, those who deny their meeting with God are losers, until the time [of judgment] will suddenly come to them and they will say, “Alas for us for what we neglected in the world.” and they will carry their burden [of sins] on their back. Be aware that it is evil what they carry.
And the life of this world is only amusement and diversion [which deceives the people, but the permanent] life of the hereafter is better for those who are pious. Do you not use reason?
Indeed, we know that what they say, saddens you, and [in fact] they do not deny you but the wrongdoers deny God’s signs.
And indeed [all] the messengers have been denied before you [as you are denied now], so they exercised patience concerning their denial and harms which they received until Our help came to them. Nothing can change God’s words. And indeed [true] news of the messengers has come to you.
And if their disregard is difficult for you, if you are able, seek a tunnel in the earth or a ladder to the sky that you may provide them a sign [to have belief in you, but you should know that they will not believe in you under any condition, while] if God had willed He would have [forcefully] brought them all together to [the straight path of] guidance, [but He never forces anyone to believe], so do not be of the ignorant.
Indeed, those who listen [to obey, they will] accept, but [those who turn deaf ear to as if they are] the dead. God will resurrect the dead [and] they will be returned to Him [and they will see the consequences of their deeds].
And they said, “Why hasn’t a sign been sent down to him from His Lord?” answer, [to them],” Indeed God is able to send down a sign [as He did in the past]”, but most of them do not know.
And all the living beings on the earth and the bird which flies with its wings [in the sky] are communities like you. We do not neglect anything in the Book, then they will be gathered unto God.
Those who deny Our signs are [like the] deaf and dumb in darkness. God leads whomever He wills astray [because of his wrong deeds,] and He leads whomever He wills to the straight path.
Say, “Inform me that if God’s punishment or the Hour comes [what will you do?] Would you call anyone but God? If you are truthful!”
No, you only pray to Him [for help], so if He wills, He will remove that which you pray to Him and you forget what you ascribe to Him [as partner].
And indeed, We sent [many messengers] to the people before you, and We made poverty and sickness strike them that they may be humble [to God and repent].
So why did they not be humble [to God] when Our disaster had been brought to them, but [instead of being humble to Him] their hearts hardened and Satan decorated what they were doing [of wrong deeds] to them.
And when they forgot what they had been reminded [of guidance,] We opened the gate of all things for them [and We provided them with abundant blessings], until they rejoiced for what they were given, [ so then We suddenly punished them [and then] they were in despair.
So those who did wrong were cut off. All praise be to God, the Lord of all the worlds.
Have you ever considered if God had taken away your [ability of] hearing [and] sight, and set a seal on your heart, which god other than God would be able to restore it? [Look to] see how We provide the signs in different ways [to them, but] still they disregard!
Say [to the disbelievers], “Let me know that if God’s punishment comes to you suddenly or openly, would it destroy anyone other than wrongdoing people?
We have not sent messengers except as givers of good news and warners, so whoever believes and reforms then neither will they fear nor will they grieve.
But those who deny Our signs will receive punishment because they used to transgress.
Say [to disbelievers] that I do not say I own God’s treasures, nor am I aware of the unseen, nor do I say I am angel, [but rather I say] I [am God’s messenger and] follow what is revealed to me. Ask [them], “Are a blind and the one who see equal? Do you not use reason?
And warn those who fear [God] with it1that they will be gathered before their Lord [and] there will be no protector nor intercessor beside Him, in order that they may be pious.
And do not drive away those who pray to God at morning and evening, seeking His pleasures. [Because] you are not accountable for them at all and they are not accountable for you at all, [so everyone is responsible for his own deeds, and know that] if you drive them away you will be of the wrongdoers.
And thus, We tested some of them with others so that they say, “Are these the ones whom God has graced among us [and chosen as a messenger]?” Does God not know better who are the thankful?
And when those who have belief in Our signs come to you, then say [to them], “Peace be on you. Your Lord has prescribed on Himself mercy, [so,] whoever of you commits an evil deed in ignorance then He repents and reforms, indeed [he will receive mercy]. Indeed, He is the All- Forgiving, All- Merciful.
Thus, We explain Our signs in detail in order that the path of the wrongdoers may be cleared.
Say, “I have been forbidden to worship those [to whom] you pray instead of God.” Say, “I do not follow your desires [because if I do so] I will go astray and I will not be among those who have been guided [to the straight path].”
Say, “Indeed, I follow the clear evidence from my Lord, [ however,] you have denied it, [But you should know that] I do not have the power to decide about which you hasten [to occur]. Only the judgment is made by God, and He relates the truth and He is the best Decider.”
Say, “If what you hasten to occur had been in my hand, the matter [of your punishment] certainly would have been decided, and God knows the wrongdoers best [and He will punish them when its time comes].”
And the keys of the unseen are with Him and only He knows it, and He knows what exists in land and sea. He is aware of every leaf that falls [from the trees], and no grain is in the darkness of earth, wet or dry, but it is in His clear Book.
And He is the One who takes your soul during night and He knows what you do during day, then He awakens you therein until the specified time is to be completed, [ so you live until the specified time of your death], then you will be returned to Him and He will inform you concerning that which you used to perform.
And He has absolute power over His servants and sends to you a guardian, and when death comes to one of you Our angels take his soul [to the Hereafter], and they do not neglect their duties.
Then they are brought to God, Who is their true master, and He is the Reckoner [Who judges] swifter than all the reckoners.
Say, “Who will save you from the darkness of the land and the sea when you pray to Him humbly and saying in secret [that] if He saves us from this condition We will certainly be thankful.”
Say, “God saves you from that [condition] and from all harm and danger, [but] then [you disregard His help and] ascribe partners to Him.”
God is able to send a punishment to you from above or beneath, or make you divide in to [argumentative] sects and make you taste the violence of one another. [Look] to see how We clarify signs in details that they may understand [that God deserves to be worshipped].
And your people denied it1 although it was the truth. Say, “ [if you believe in it or not] I am not responsible for you [and your deeds].”
Any news has its appointed term, and soon you will know.
And when you see those who speak in a disrespectfully about Our signs, withdraw from them until they change their discourse, but if Satan makes you forget [this command] do not sit with the wrongdoers after remembrance.
Those who are pious are not responsible for them. Rather [this verse is a] remembrance that they may be pious.
And leave alone those who take their religion to be play and amusement, whom the life of the present world has deceived them. [Hence] remind [them] with it2 lest a soul be destroyed by what it has earned, [because] the soul will have no protector nor an intercessor besides God [in the hereafter, so] even if it pays everything as ransom, it will not be accepted from it. They are those who will be ruined because of what they have committed, [so] they will have boiling liquid for drink and they will receive a severe punishment because they disbelieved [and committed sins] .
Say, “Will we call [the idols for help] instead of God, which do not bring us benefit nor can harm us, and will we turn back [to the time of ignorance] after God has guided us? Like someone whom Satan has misled him in the desert [and has left him] confused [while] he has friends who invite him to guidance [and say to him], “Come to us.” Say, “Indeed, God’s guidance is a [helpful] guidance and we have been ordered to be submissive to the Lord of the worlds.”
And perform prayer and fear Him, and He is the One to whom you will be gathered.
He is the One who has created the heavens and the earth with truth, and when He says “Be!” Then [without hesitation] it is. His word is the truth and when the trumpet will be blown, He will exercise [absolute] Sovereignty. He is the Knower of the unseen and the seen [world], and He is All-Wise, All-Knowing.
And when Abraham said to his father, Āzar, “Do you take idles as gods? Indeed, I see you and your people in glaring error.”
And thus, We have disclosed to Abraham the domination of [God over] the heavens and earth, that he may be of those who are [absolutely] certain [in belief].
When the night fell over him, he saw a star in the sky [and] said, “This is my Lord” but when it set, he said, “I do not like the things which set.”
And when he saw the moon coming out, he said, “This is my Lord” but when it landed, he said, “If God had not guided me, I would certainly be of those who went astray.”
And when he saw the sun coming up, he said, “This is my Lord, this is greater, but when it sank, he said, “O my people! I abandon that which you ascribe to Him.”
“I turn my face towards Him who has originated the heavens and the earth following truth as a sincere follower of truth and I am not of the polytheists.
His people disputed with him [but] he replied, “Do you dispute with me about God while He has guided me and I am not fearful of what you ascribe to Him as partners, unless my Lord wills to do something [otherwise no one is able to do anything against me], Knowledge of my Lord extends over all things. Do you not take heed?”
How could I fear [the idols] which you ascribe to God, while you do not fear ascribing partners to Him; [it is a wrong deed] for which He has not provided you with authentic evidence. [So think of this fact that] which of the two groups deserve to be safe, if you know.
Those who believed and have not undermined their belief with wrong deeds, they will be safe and they are the guided.
And those are Our arguments. We provided Abraham with it against his people. We raise the rank of whomever We will [on the basis of wisdom and knowledge]. Indeed, your Lord is All-Wise, All-Knowing.
And We granted him Isaac and Jacob; We guided both of them [because they followed Our guidance], and We did guide Noah before; and of his children [We also had guided] David, Solomon, Job, Joseph, Moses and Aaron, and Thus We reward the righteous.
And [we also guided] Zachariah, John, Jesus and Elias. All of them were of the righteous.
And Ishmael, Elisha, Jonah and Lot [We also guided to the straight path because they obeyed Our commands and they were submissive to God]; hence We preferred them over all the people of the worlds.
And from their fathers, descendants, and their brothers We chose and guided [the qualified servants] to the straight path [because of their obedience and submission].
That is God’s guidance through which He guides whomever of His servants He wills, but if they ascribe partners to Him, what they used to will be fruitless.
Those are the [chosen] people, We gave them the book, authority, and Prophethood, if these [disbelievers] disbelieve in it, We will certainly entrust it to [the qualified people] who will not abandon belief in it.
They are those whom God has guided, so follow their guidance, and say, “I do not demand a wage for it1. It is certainly a reminder to all the people of the worlds.
And they did not honor God as He deserves when they said, “God has not sent down anything to a human being.” Say, “Who did send down the book which Moses brought as a light and guidance for people, and you make it into pages and disclose [some of] it and conceal much [of it]. You were taught by it what you and your father did not know [before]”, so say, “God” then leave them play at their vain discoures.
And this is a blessed Book that We sent down. It confirms [the books] which were sent down before. We sent it down that you may warn the people of the Mother of Cities [Mecca] and those who live around it, and those who believe in the hereafter believe in it and they keep on [performing] their prayer.
And who commits a greater wrong than one who lies against God, or says, “It has been revealed to me” while nothing has been revealed to him and who says, “I will reveal [the Qurʼān] like the one which God has revealed.” If you could see the wrongdoers when they face the painful stages of death, when the angels stretch their hands [saying], “Bring out your souls! You will receive a humiliating punishment due to what you used to say wrongfully against God and have arrogance to [believe in] His signs.”
[After the death of the aforementioned wrongdoers, it will be said to them,] “Indeed, you have come to Us alone just as We first created you, and you have left in the world what We had provided you, and We do not see your intercessor with you whom you [had] imagined to be [God’s] partner. Indeed, connection between you has been broken and what you used to imagine [to be your helper] has abandoned you.
Indeed, God is the One who makes the grain and the date seeds sprout. He brings the living out of dead and brings dead out of living2. Such is God, [so] How could you [neglect truth and] go wrong!
He is the One Who separates the dawn [from night], and He has placed the night [as a time] for resting, and the sun and the moon for reckoning [and knowing the date]. This is the management of God, the All- Mighty, All-Wise.
It is He who has made for you the stars by which you may find your path in the darkness on land and sea. Indeed, We clarify Our signs in detail for those who know.
And it is He who has produced you from one soul1, then [you have been provided with] a dwelling place and a repository. Indeed, We have clarified the signs in detail for those who understand.
And it is [God] Who sent down water from the sky, by which We yield all vegetation, greenery, the grain in clusters, date-palm the pollen thereof, the gardens of grapes, olives and pomegranates, similar or different. See its product when it produces fruit and [when] it is ripening. Indeed, there are clear signs [of God in these creations] for the believers.
They ascribed the jinn as partners to God, while He has created them. And they ascribed sons and daughters to Him without knowledge. He is Glorified and Exalted above that which they ascribe to Him.
He is the originator of the heavens and earth [and no one is equal to Him, so] How should He have a child while He has not had a spouse, and [you should know that] He has created all things, and He knows all things.
That is God, your Lord. There is no God but Him. He is the creator of all thing, so worship Him [alone]. And [know that] He is guardian over all things.
Eyes do not see Him, but He sees the eyes, and He is the AllSubtle, the All-aware.
Indeed, insight has come to you from your Lord, therefore, whoever regards it, it is for his benefit and whoever turns a blind eye to it I2 am not keeper over you.
Thus We explain Our signs in detail, lest they may say [O Muhammad! It is not God’s words; and you say to the people what] you have studied before. And thus We clarify it for the people who know.
Follow that which has been sent down to you from your Lord [because] there is no God but Him, and turn away from the polytheists.
And if God had willed [He could have forced them to worship Him, so] they would not have been polytheists [but He never forces His servants to choose an option] and We have not appointed you as a keeper over them nor are you responsible for them.
Do not revile at those whom pray [to idols] instead of God, lest they wrongfully revile at God without knowledge. Thus, We have made the [wrong] deeds of any people seem beautiful for them [due to their sins]. Then their return will be to God and He will inform them about what they used to perform.
And they swear a solemn oath by God that if a sign comes to them [concerning God] they will believe in it. Say, “Signs are with God [and He decides when it may come]” while you do not know; if such come to them they will not have belief.
And We will change their hearts and eyes [toward disbelief for what they did] as they disbelieve in it at first, and We leave them to wander confused in their disobedience [until they face their punishment].
And if We had sent down the angels to them and the dead had talked to them and We had provided all things [e.g. evidences] in front of them, they would not have believed, unless God would have willed [to force them to believe, but God never forces people to believe]but most of them are ignorant.
And thus We appointed to every Prophet an enemy [from] the human being and jinn, who inspire each other with flowery words [to do wrong and cause harm to the messengers], and if your Lord had willed [to force them to give up their wrong deeds] they would not have committed it, [but He never forces someone to do something], so leave them alone with what they [wrongfully] fabricate.
And [it is so that] until the hearts of those who disbelieve in the Hereafter will incline toward it [wrong deeds] and be pleased with it and that they commit what they [wish to] commit [of wrong deeds until they face their punishment].
And [it is so that] until the hearts of those who disbelieve in the Hereafter will incline toward it [wrong deeds] and be pleased with it and that they commit what they [wish to] commit [of wrong deeds until they face their punishment].
And the word of your Lord has been truthfully and justly completed in truth and justice. Nothing can change His words and He is All-Hearing, All-Knowing.
And if you obey most of the people on earth, they will lead you astray from God’s path [because] they only follow a guess, and they only assume.
Indeed, your Lord knows best who has gone astray from His path, and He knows best the rightly guided.
Eat of that [meat which has been slaughtered in a lawful way and] the name of God has been mentioned over it, if you believe in His signs.
Why do you refuse to eat of that [meat which has been slaughtered in a lawful way and] the name of God has been mentioned over it [before slaughtering] while He has explained the forbidden [things] for you in detail, unless that [unlawful things] which you are compelled to eat. Indeed, many people, without knowledge, lead others astray with [following] their worldly desires. Indeed, your Lord knows best the transgressors.
Give up sins in public and in secret, [because] those who commit sins will receive the punishment as result of [sins] which they used to perpetrate.
And do not eat of that [meat which has been slaughtered in an unlawful way and] God’s name has not been mentioned over it [before slaughtering, because] it is transgression, and indeed the Satans inspire their friends [among human beings] to argue with you [about God’s law, but you should know that] if you obey them you will be polytheists.
Is the one who is dead, whom We gave him life and provided him with a light through which he walks among people, [the same] as the example of one who is in darkness? Thus what the disbelievers commit has been decorated [ made appealing for] them.
Thus We have made1 the greatest wrongdoer in every city to plot therein, [even though We had commanded them to avoid wrongdoing but they violated God’s law, so you should know that] in fact, they only plot against themselves, however, they are unaware.
And when a sign comes to them, they say, “We will not believe [in it] unless we should be given what God’s messengers were given.” God knows better where to place His Prophethood [and who deserves to be His messenger]. The guilty will be debased before God and they will receive severe punishment because they used to hatch plots.
So, whomever God wills to guide [due to his good deeds and good intentions], He increases His capacity to [embrace] Islam, but whomever He wills to lead astray [due to his evil intentions and bad deeds], He reduces his capacity, [so he cannot exercise patience in God’s path] as if he ascends upwards to the sky. Thus God brings spiritual impurity to those who abandon belief.
And this is the path of your Lord, the straight path. Indeed, We have explained the signs in detail for those who [devote attention and] take heed.
They will have the abode of peace before their Lord and He will be their guardian because of what they used to perform.
And when He will gather all of them [on the Day of Judgment and He will say,] “O you, the company of jinn, you attracted many followers from the human beings [and led them astray]”, and their friends among human beings will reply, “O our Lord! We enjoyed one another, but our time which you had appointed for us, came”. God will say, “Your abode is Fire to remain in it forever unless God may will [to save you]. Indeed, your Lord is All-Wise, AllKnowing.”
And thus We made some of the wrongdoers be under the leadership of others due to what they used to commit.
O the company of the jinn and human beings! Did not a messenger from among you come and recite My signs and warn you about the day of meeting? They will reply, “We testify against ourselves [that we wronged]”. The life of the world deceived them, and they will testify against themselves that they were disbelievers.
That is because your Lord would never unjustly destroy the [people of] the town while their people are unaware [of their duty1].
And everyone has a rank according to what they performed and your Lord is not heedless of what they perform.
And your Lord is the Self- Sufficient [Who need nothing], the Merciful. If He wills, He takes you away and brings after you whomever He wills, as He created you from the descendants of other people.
Indeed, what you are promised will be fulfilled and you cannot prevent [God from doing] it.
Say, “O people! Do according to your position [and ability but know that] I, too, will perform [my own duty for the sake of God] so you will come to know who will have the [favorable] outcome of the abode [of hereafter]. Indeed, the wrongdoers will not prosper.”
And they assigned of the crops and cattle which God created, a share to Him and claimed that this is God’s share and this is for [our idols,] the partners [of God], but God did not receive from [the share] which they had given to their partner while their partner could take from what they gave to God1 Indeed, they made an evil judgment.
Thus [the feeling of love for] their partners made many of the polytheists find the killing of their children pleasing, in order to bring about their destruction and make their religion confusing for them, and if God willed [to prevent them forcefully], they would have not performed it [but God never forces someone to perform or give up a deed], so leave them alone with what they devise.
They said that these animals and crops are forbidden [to be used]. No one is allowed to eat of them except whom we please. They did surmise so, [and also claimed that] the back of these animals are forbidden and the name of God is not mentioned over them [before slaughtering. But you should know that it is] a lie against God, [so,] He will punish them for what they used to devise against Him.
And they said, “That which exists in the bellies of such animals is exclusively for our males and is forbidden to our wives. But if it be stillborn, then all of them will receive a share of it” He will punish them for their allegation. Indeed, He is All-Wise, All- Knowing.
Indeed, those who killed their children foolishly, without knowledge and forbade what God has provided them lost. These are lies against God. Indeed they went astray and they were not guided.
And it is [God] Who yielded both trellised and non-trellised gardens, the date-palm, different kinds of crops, the olive and the pomegranate, like and unlike. [You are allowed to] eat of the fruits [that God has given to you but] pay its due1 on the day of harvest. And do waste [because] He does not like the wasteful.
And some of the animals [have been created] as carriers of burden, and some [of them have been created] for its meat. [Hence you are allowed to] eat of that which God has provided you [but do not violate God’s law] and do not follow the footsteps of Satan. Indeed, he is your clear enemy.
[Why did you change God’s law and create false law? We have made lawful] eight pairs2 [including]: of the sheep [male and female] and of the goat [male and female, so why did you make it unlawful. O Prophet!] say, “Is it the two male that have been forbidden or the females or what exists in the wombs of the two females? [No! all of them are lawful but you have changed God’s law, so] if you are truthful [in your claim], inform me with knowledge.
And of the camel two [both male and female], and of the cattle two [male and female have been made lawful for you, then O messenger, ask them why do they change God’s law and] say, “Is it the two males He has forbidden or the two females or what exists in the wombs of the two females? Or what did you witness when God enjoined this upon you? [, So why do you forbid them without knowledge].” Who commits a greater wrong than the one who lies against God [and creates a false law] without knowledge to lead people astray? Indeed, God does not guide the wrongdoers.
Say, “I do not find within [the law] which has been revealed to me the forbidden thing to eat except the dead animal, spilt blood, or flesh of swine, because it is impure. Or a sinful offering made to other than God. But whoever is compelled by necessity to consume [the forbidden food] without intention of committing sin or transgressing [he will be forgiven because] indeed God is AllForgiving, All-Merciful.
And We have forbidden for the Jews all the animals which have claws, and We have forbidden the fat of the cow and sheep for them unless the fat which exists on the back or the entrails, or that which is mingled with the bones. We have punished them [with this law] for their rebellion, and indeed We are truthful.
If they deny you, say [to them that] your Lord has a vast mercy and His punishment will not be averted from the guilty.
The polytheists will [pretext] saying, “If God had willed, we and our fathers would not have ascribed partners to Him, nor would we have forbidden [what He had made lawful].” Thus those who lived before them denied [God’s signs and lied against Him] until they received Our punishment. Say [to them], “Do you have knowledge [concerning your claim] to demonstrate it to us? [No you possess no knowledge concerning your claim, but] you only follow the false conjecture and you only surmise.”
Say, “The conclusive argument belongs to God [who argues against the disbelievers]. If He had willed, He would have guided all of you [forcefully, but He never forces someone to choose a path].”
Say [to the polytheists], “Appeal to your witnesses who may [wrongfully] testify that God has forbidden all this” If they [wrongfully] testify, do not testify with them and do not follow the worldly desires of those who denied Our signs, nor those who do not have belief in God and those who equate partners with their Lord.
Say [to them], “Come to me to recite what He has forbidden: that you should not ascribe partners to Him, and [you should] treat your parents kindly, do not kill your children because of poverty, do not approach indecencies neither in secret nor in public, and do not kill the one whom God forbade to be killed unless through legal right1. This is what He has commanded you that you may use reason!”
Do not approach the wealth of an orphan except in a best manner, until they grow to maturity. And justly give full measure and weight. [You should now that] we never overburden someone with works beyond his capacity. And when you speak [or testify] be just even though it is [against] your relatives. And fulfill God’s covenant. This is what God has enjoined upon you, that you may take heed.
And indeed, this is My straight path [which I clarify to you], so follow it, but do not follow [wrong] paths lest you be parted from His [straight] path. This is what God enjoined upon you, that you may be pious.
Then We gave the Book to Moses to complete [Our favor] to him who has performed good. It is a clarification for all things, and a guidance and a mercy that they may believe in the meeting with their Lord.
And this is a blessed Book which We sent down, therefore, follow it [’s teachings] that you may recieve mercy.
[So We sent down the book to you] lest you may say the Book only has been sent down to two groups1 before us and we were unaware concerning what they study.
Lest you may say if the Book had been sent down to us, we certainly would have been better guided than them. Now a clear proof, a guidance and a mercy came to you from your Lord, so who commits a greater sin than one who denies the signs of God and turns away from it? We will soon severely punish those who turn away from Our signs because of their turning away.
Would they wait for something other than the angels [of punishment] to come to them or [commands of] your Lord should come, or for some of the signs of your Lord come to them? [They should know that when they are punished], later belief will not be useful for one who had not believed before, or the one who had not performed some good [deeds in addition] to his belief. Say, “Wait! [until you see the truthfulness of God’s promises] indeed we too are waiting.”
Indeed, those who divided their religion [into different groups] and became sects, you have nothing to do with them [ so, leave them alone because] God will decide concerning their matter, then He will inform them about what they used to do.
Whoever performs a good deed will receive [a reward] ten times the like of it; but whoever commits an evil-deed, only will be punished with its like, and they will not be wronged.
Say, “Indeed, my Lord has guided me to the straight path, [ which is] the right religion, the creed of Abraham, the sincere follower of truth, who was not of the polytheists”.
Say, “Indeed, my prayer, my deeds of worship, my life, and my death are for the sake of God, Lord of all worlds.”
He has no partner, and I have been commanded to [follow] this [creed] and I am the first of those [who are submissive to God].
Say, “[Why] should I seek a Lord other than God while He is the [All-Creator and] Lord of all things?” No one commits evil deeds unless against himself and no one will carry the burden of others, then you will return to God and He will inform you concerning what you used to differ [on].
And it is He who has appointed you as the successors on the earth and raised the degree of some of you over others in order that He may test you through what He has given to you. Indeed, your Lord’s punishment is swift. And indeed, He is All-forgiving, AllMerciful.

Say, ‘Who delivers you from the darkness of land and sea, [when] You invoke Him suppliantly and secretly: ‘‘If He delivers us from this, we will surely be among the grateful’’?’ Say, ‘It is Allah who delivers you from them and from every agony, [but] then you ascribe partners [to Him].’ 9

It is He who sends down water from the sky, and brings forth with it every kind of growing thing. Then from it We bring forth vegetation from which We produce the grain, in clusters, and from the palm-tree, from the spathes of it, low-hanging clusters [of dates], and gardens of grapes, olives and pomegranates, similar and dissimilar. When he prayed to his Lord quietly. It is He who produces gardens trellised and without trellises, and palm-trees and crops of diverse produce, olives and pomegranates, similar and dissimilar. Of the cattle [some] are for burden and [some] for slaughter. Eat of what Allah has provided you and do not follow in Satan’s footsteps; he is indeed your manifest enemy. 13
Famous verses of Surah Anam
All verses of surah Anam are filled with light and heavenly smell, however, three of them are more famous:
1. The people of the book knew Muhammad well (6:20)
The people of the book, meaning the Christians and the Jews knew the Prophet’s qualities and characteristics very well just like they recognized their own sons, nevertheless, some refused to believe in his prophethood.
Those whom We have given the Book recognize him just as they recognize their sons. Those who have ruined their souls will not have faith. 14
2. God multiplies your good act by ten (6:160)
One of the indications of God’s mercy to mankind is the multiplying of their good acts by ten yet with regards to their bad deeds, they are recompensed with the like of it.
Whoever brings a good deed, he shall have ten like it, and whoever brings an evil deed, he shall be recompensed only with the like of it, and they shall not be dealt with unjustly. 15
3. Surah Anam teaches you to be a responsible individual (6:164)
Allah (SWT) has given all human beings a well-proportioned soul that has the ability to distinguish between right and wrong. Moreover, at all times, there have been messengers and guides to help people step on the path of righteousness. Therefore, if one does a wrong action, he will be held accountable for it and cannot blame others.
No soul does evil except against itself, and no bearer shall bear another’s burden. 16
Nevertheless, at times the guides to corruption and mischief will have a heavier burden to carry as they were the cause of misguidance:
[with the result] that they will bear the full weight of their own burden on the Day of Resurrection, along with part of the burden of those whom they mislead without any knowledge. Behold! Evil is what they bear! 17
8 points to learn from surah Anam
The chapters and luminous verses of the Quran are filled with words which could shape one’s mentality, behaviour and habits. Surah Anam is no exception. There are many insightful lessons one can learn from this surah such as realizing our position in this world and our relationship with God Almighty. What follows are 7 points one can learn from surah Anam:
1. Mindful travelling
Say, ‘Travel over the land, and then observe how was the fate of the deniers.’ 18
The lifestyle taught by the Quran is a mindful one which involves critical thinking. Think of going to a Museum or historical sight where the remains of an empire is to be seen. People usually ask for how far ago the objects or structure date back and what kind of technology was used. However, the Quran teaches us to take a deeper step and look at the picture with a more holistic view. Some of these people who lived in the past had so much power and might but they were destroyed as they were unbelievers or polytheists.
2. Everything is in God’s hands
“If Allah touch thee with affliction, none can remove it but He; if He touch thee with happiness, He hath power over all things. 19
Surah Anam keeps repeating in various verses that Allah is the source of all power and wisdom. In all the ups and downs of life, He alone is the one whom one can rely upon. He knows all that is happening on the earth and in the darkness of lower levels of our planet and has the power to bring upon change.
3. This life is just a game
The life of the world is nothing but play and diversion, and the abode of the Hereafter is surely better for those who are Godwary. Do you not exercise your reason? 20
The worldly life is full of glitters and shine and attracts the eyes to it. In fact, the quality of this life is in a way which derives you to it and since mankind is designed by Allah (SWT) to pursue perfection, many are after a flawless life in this world, however, the Quran, keeps reminding individuals that this world is just a play and diversion and instructs them to gather their provisions for the eternal life to come.
4. Surah Anam asks people to heed the Environment
There is no animal on land, nor a bird that flies with its wings, but they are communities like yourselves. 21
In various surahs of the Quran, people are told to look around themselves at the animals and plants which surround them to find the power and wisdom of Allah through a critical deep outlook at what has been created.
There is a beautiful verse in surah Anam which mentions the similitude of animals and birds to human beings in having communities. Look at ants, bees, monkeys, elephants, lions, zebras and all the other moving creatures on the face of the earth. They all enjoy a certain degree of intelligence.
5. Satan decorates their bad actions for them
Human beings inbornly like beauty. Through the same channel Satan penetrates into the minds of people and deviates them from the path of truth. He make sins look beautiful in their sight.
Satan had made what they had been doing seem decorous to them. 22
6. Perhaps you may like something but it may be bad for you 23
So when they forgot what they had been admonished of, We opened for them the gates of all [good] things. When they became proud of what they were given, We seized them suddenly, whereat, behold, they were despondent. 24
One way of punishment for those who have long forgotten God’s admonishment is to receive more and more bounties from God until they feel proud of what they have in life. Right then, they are suddenly seized by death or punishment.
Verse 45 of surah Anam provides a concluding remark to the fate of the aforementioned group of oppressors. They are wiped off the face of the earth:
When he prayed to his Lord quietly. Thus the wrongdoing lot were rooted out, and all praise belongs to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. 25
So if you think that you are leading a sinful life yet you are receiving abundant blessings from God, wait for a moment, for these could be signs of punishment on the way.
7. They key to a stress-free and happy life
As for those who are faithful and righteous, they will have no fear, nor will they grieve. 26
Stress, depression and anxiety are the common problems of so many people in today’s world. Two of the roots to these problems are humanism and materialism. We want everything to be within our control and see ourselves capable of handling any challenge which comes our way. God practically plays no role in our life. We do not trust Him and do not count on His help.
Surah Anam reminds us that God’s power is not comparable with ours. He knows every single event which happens in the land and sea, even the falling of leaves. 27 Secondly, it tells us that if one fixes one’s mindset and acts according to what God wants, he will never become anxious or depressed.
8. The Prophet as the best model of monotheism in Surah Anam
Say, ‘Indeed my prayer and my worship, my life and my death are for the sake of Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. 28
The Noble Quran provides a practical role model for us. The Messenger of God (S) was someone whose entire life was dedicated to God. He goes a step further and says that even his death is for God’s sake. This is pure monotheism.
Why was surah Anam revealed
Similar to other Meccan surahs, surah Anam deals with the principle beliefs of the Muslims such as monotheism, prophethood and the belief in resurrection.
Surah Anam particularly answers the questions posed by the polytheists and the excuses they brought not to believe in the mission of the Noble Prophet (S). Basically, there are seven questions posed:
- Why can’t we see the angels who descend to the Prophet (8-36)?
- Why doesn’t God send a sign to prove the truthfulness of His Messenger? (37-90)
- Allah has not sent down any book to any human. (91-108)
- Were the Prophet to bring down the sign we had asked for, we would believe in him. (109-123)
- When a sign comes to them, they say, ‘We will not believe until we are given the like of what was given to Allah’s apostles.’ (124-135)
- They considered God’s religion to be the same as the heresies among the unbelievers. (136-147)
- ‘Had Allah wished we would not have ascribed any partner [to Him], nor our fathers, nor would we have forbidden anything.’ (148-160)
Surah Anam ends by emphasizing on the truthfulness of Islam as the creed of Prophet Ibrahim (AS). (161-165)
