The Unbreakable Brotherhood Bond in Islam: The Prophet’s Legacy

0 1,270

Brotherhood in Islam, a fundamental and foundational concept, transcends mere friendship and camaraderie. Rooted deeply in the teachings of the Holy Quran and the traditions of the Prophet Muhammad and his Ahlul Bait. Brotherhood forms an essential part of the Islamic faith. The concept of brotherhood in Islam emphasizes unity, equality, and solidarity among Muslims, fostering a strong sense of love, empathy, and support for one another. It serves as a guide for how believers should treat each other, irrespective of their ethnic, cultural, or social backgrounds.

The Holy Quran provides a foundation for this concept by emphasizing the importance of unity and brotherhood among believers. In Surah Al-Hujurat (49:10), Allah says:

“Indeed, the believers are brothers, so reconcile between your brothers and fear Allah that you may receive mercy.”

There are numerous hadiths from the Ahl al-Bayt, which further illustrate the significance of brotherhood in Islam. For example, Another hadith from Imam al-Sadiq (AS) in al-Kafi emphasizes the importance of mutual love and support among Muslims:

“A Muslim is a brother to another Muslim. He is like an eye for him (i.e. he shows his good and bad qualities), is like his mirror (he shows his beauty and ugliness); and is his guide. A Muslim never acts treasonably to his brother, does not oppress him, does not play tricks on him, does not lie to him, and does not resort to fault-finding and backbiting towards him.” Kafi, vol.2, p.166.

These verses and hadiths exemplify the core essence of Islamic brotherhood, which is grounded in love, empathy, and mutual support. This brotherhood is an essential element of the Islamic faith and serves as a cornerstone for building strong, cohesive, and harmonious Muslim communities.

The Hijrah: A Pivotal Moment in Islamic History

The migration of Muslims from Mecca to Medina, known as the Hijrah, marked a turning point in Islamic history. Faced with increasing persecution and hostility in Mecca, the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and his followers were compelled to seek refuge in Medina, where they found a more receptive and supportive environment. The Hijrah holds great significance for Muslims, as it not only symbolizes the beginning of the Islamic calendar but also represents the birth of a new Muslim community founded on the principles of brotherhood and unity.

The Bond Between Muhajireen and Ansar

Upon arrival in Medina, the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) took a revolutionary step to ensure the successful integration of the Meccan migrants (Muhajireen) into the Medinan society. He established a bond of brotherhood (Mu’akhah) between the Muhajireen and the Ansar, the local residents of Medina who welcomed and supported the Prophet and his followers. This bond transcended tribal and social boundaries, creating a united community of believers who were bound together by their shared faith.

The Mu’akhah system was instrumental in fostering a sense of unity and support among the early Muslims. The Ansar willingly shared their resources, homes, and livelihoods with the Muhajireen, ensuring that the new community in Medina was built on a solid foundation of mutual assistance and cooperation. This bond of brotherhood facilitated the integration of the Muhajireen into the Medinan society, allowing them to contribute to the growth and development of the nascent Muslim community.

The Prophet’s Wisdom in Fostering Unity

The establishment of the bond of brotherhood in Medina showcased the Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) wisdom and foresight in creating a strong sense of unity among early Muslims. By emphasizing the importance of mutual support and cooperation, the Prophet (PBUH) laid the groundwork for a cohesive and inclusive Muslim community. This community was built on the shared principles of faith, rather than on tribal or social affiliations, paving the way for a more egalitarian society.

Furthermore, the Prophet (PBUH) actively encouraged the early Muslims to treat one another with kindness, compassion, and respect, reinforcing the importance of brotherhood in their daily lives. He led by example, embodying the values of humility, empathy, and selflessness that form the core of Islamic brotherhood.

To which Allah SWT revealed:

“Indeed, those who have believed and emigrated and fought with their wealth and lives in the cause of Allah and those who gave shelter and aided – they are allies of one another. But for those who believed and did not emigrate – for you there is no guardianship of them until they emigrate. And if they seek help of you for the religion, then you must help, except against a people between yourselves and whom is a treaty. And Allah is Seeing of what you do.” (Surah Al-Anfal, 8:72)

Key Principles of the Islamic Brotherhood

1- Equality and Justice

The principle of equality and justice is fundamental to the concept of brotherhood in Islam. According to Islamic teachings, all believers are equal in the eyes of Allah, regardless of their race, ethnicity, social status, or gender. This equality serves as the basis for the strong bond of brotherhood that unites Muslims around the world.

The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) emphasized the importance of treating every individual with fairness and justice, regardless of their background. In his Farewell Sermon, the Prophet stated, “An Arab has no superiority over a non-Arab, nor does a non-Arab have any superiority over an Arab; a white person has no superiority over a black person, nor does a black person have any superiority over a white person, except by piety and good action.” This message underscores the significance of equality and justice as the foundation of Islamic brotherhood.

Allah SWT says:

“O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the noblest of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Acquainted.” Surah Al-Hujurat (49:13)

2- Mutual Love, Respect, and Empathy Among Believers

Another key principle of Islamic brotherhood is the emphasis on mutual love, respect, and empathy among believers. Muslims are encouraged to treat one another with kindness, understanding, and compassion, fostering a sense of unity and solidarity that transcends social, cultural, and geographical boundaries.

The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) taught that true faith is reflected in the way believers treat one another. He said, “None of you truly believes until he loves for his brother what he loves for himself”.

3- Rights and Responsibilities of Muslim Towards Each Other

Islamic brotherhood is not only about fostering positive emotions and attitudes towards one another; it also entails a set of rights and responsibilities that Muslims have towards their fellow believers. These rights and responsibilities are designed to ensure that Muslims support and care for each other in times of need, reinforcing the strong bond of brotherhood.

Some of these rights and responsibilities include providing emotional and material support to fellow Muslims, offering help and assistance in times of need, protecting each other’s honor and dignity, praying for one another, and promoting peace and harmony within the community.

“The believing men and believing women are allies of one another. They enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong and establish prayer and give zakah and obey Allah and His Messenger. Those – Allah will have mercy upon them. Indeed, Allah is Exalted in Might and Wise.” Surah At-Tawbah (9:71)

The Role of Brotherhood in Modern Society:

The Importance of Brotherhood in Promoting Harmony Among Muslims

In today’s fast-paced and interconnected world, the importance of brotherhood in maintaining social cohesion and promoting harmony among Muslims cannot be overstated. As members of a global community, Muslims from different backgrounds, cultures, and traditions must come together to support and uplift one another, fostering unity and understanding.

Islamic brotherhood plays a vital role in bridging cultural, ethnic, and social divides, bringing Muslims together under the shared values and principles of their faith. By emphasizing the importance of compassion, empathy, and solidarity, Islamic brotherhood can contribute to the development of strong, cohesive, and harmonious Muslim communities in the modern world.

“And hold fast by the covenant of Allah all together and be not disunited, and remember the favor of Allah on you when you were enemies, then He united your hearts so by His favor you became brethren; and you were on the brink of a pit of fire…” (3:103)

The Challenges Faced by Muslims in Preserving Brotherhood

Preserving the bonds of brotherhood in today’s diverse and globalized world can be challenging for Muslims. The increasing interconnectedness of societies has led to greater exposure to different cultures, beliefs, and lifestyles, which can sometimes create tensions and misunderstandings among believers.

Moreover, the prevalence of social media and online communication has given rise to new forms of interaction that can sometimes erode the bonds of brotherhood, fostering division and discord among Muslims. In this context, it is crucial for Muslims to recognize the importance of Islamic brotherhood and actively work to nurture and strengthen these bonds in the face of contemporary challenges.

“He who begins his day without endeavouring for the improvement of Muslims’ affairs, is no Muslim.” Kafi,vol.2,p.146.
