The Day of Judgment: The Day Justice Will Be Served

Justice is a lost treasure that people worldwide seek to gain, even though justice is rarely achieved in the world. The Day of Judgment (Qiyamah) is the Day of Justice.

God is just and loves justice. Therefore, He will judge based on justice on the Day of Judgment, and no one will be oppressed. He does not like those who are unjust or those who mistreat people.

In this article, we will learn the following:

God Promotes Justice

God is the source of beauty and life. The All-Creator who created man and provided him with abundant blessings. The Most Kind who places love in the heart of a mother to take care of her children. Then How could He be cruel while He is the source of love and beauty? How could He oppress His servants? It is impossible and beyond the truth. He is just and strongly emphasizes that no one will be oppressed in life or on the Day of Judgment. Let us see the verses that show that God does not like nor permits oppression even in wars and battlefields.

 فَإِن لَّمْ تَفْعَلُوا فَأْذَنُوا بِحَرْبٍ مِّنَ اللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِ وَإِن تُبْتُمْ فَلَكُمْ رُءُوسُ أَمْوَالِكُمْ لَا تَظْلِمُونَ وَلَا تُظْلَمُونَ ‎

If you do not [give up usury], then you have been warned of a war against God and His messenger, but if you repent, you will possess [only] the principal of your wealth. Thus you will not wrong nor will you be wronged.¹

Not only does God not oppress people in the world, but He assures us that He will repay those who perform good deeds or struggle in His path in full. They will receive the reward for what they accomplished. Therefore, they will not be wronged at all. The generous God mentions that whatsoever people pay in the path of God will be paid in full and then adds that the life of the world is temporary, so they should not adhere to it. Instead, they should pay heed to the life of the Hereafter and its vast rewards. 

قُلْ مَتَاعُ الدُّنْيَا قَلِيلٌ وَالْآخِرَةُ خَيْرٌ لِّمَنِ اتَّقَىٰ وَلَا تُظْلَمُونَ فَتِيلًا ‎

Say the enjoyment of this world is little and the life of the Hereafter is better for those who fear God, and you will not be wronged at all.²

وَأَعِدُّوا لَهُم مَّا اسْتَطَعْتُم مِّن قُوَّةٍ وَمِن رِّبَاطِ الْخَيْلِ تُرْهِبُونَ بِهِ عَدُوَّ اللَّهِ وَعَدُوَّكُمْ وَآخَرِينَ مِن دُونِهِمْ لَا تَعْلَمُونَهُمُ اللَّهُ يَعْلَمُهُمْ وَمَا تُنفِقُوا مِن شَيْءٍ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ يُوَفَّ إِلَيْكُمْ وَأَنتُمْ لَا تُظْلَمُونَ ‎

Prepare strong military and war-horses against them as much as you can [to defend, and] terrify God’s enemy and your enemy and other enemies whom you do not know of but God knows them, and whatever you spend in God’s path, you will be repaid in full and you will not be wronged.³

God Loves Justice

Not only is God just, but He also commands the believers to seek, promote, and achieve justice in all affairs. He will judge based on justice in the world to come. The angels and the knowing people will bear witness on that day.

قُلْ أَمَرَ رَبِّي بِالْقِسْطِ وَأَقِيمُوا وُجُوهَكُمْ عِندَ كُلِّ مَسْجِدٍ وَادْعُوهُ مُخْلِصِينَ لَهُ الدِّينَ كَمَا بَدَأَكُمْ تَعُودُونَ 

Say, “My Lord has enjoined justice and [commanded] to turn your face [wholeheartedly] to Him in all worshipping places and call Him dedicating your religion exclusively to Him. You will return to Him as He created you [first].⁴

شَهِدَ اللَّهُ أَنَّهُ لَا إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ وَالْمَلَائِكَةُ وَأُولُو الْعِلْمِ قَائِمًا بِالْقِسْطِ لَا إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ الْعَزِيزُ الْحَكِيمُ 

God bears witness that there is no god other than He. And the angels and learned men [also bear witness that there is no God but Him]. He is Just in everything He does; there is no God other than He, the Almighty, the All-Wise.⁵

Nothing must prevent people from seeking justice. Even if someone bears or holds animosity towards you, you are not allowed to oppress him, nor are you allowed to judge him unfairly. God is displeased with injustice even if we treat our enemy unfairly. God mentions these issues several times in the Quran. For instance, God states in the Quran: 

 يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا كُونُوا قَوَّامِينَ بِالْقِسْطِ شُهَدَاءَ لِلَّهِ وَلَوْ عَلَىٰ أَنفُسِكُمْ أَوِ الْوَالِدَيْنِ وَالْأَقْرَبِينَ إِن يَكُنْ غَنِيًّا أَوْ فَقِيرًا فَاللَّهُ أَوْلَىٰ بِهِمَا فَلَا تَتَّبِعُوا الْهَوَىٰ أَن تَعْدِلُوا وَإِن تَلْوُوا أَوْ تُعْرِضُوا فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ كَانَ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ خَبِيرًا ‎

O You Who Believe! Be maintainers of justice [and judge fairly] and be [rightful] witnesses for [the sake of] God [when you testify], even though it be against yourselves, your parents, and near relatives, [because] if they are rich or poor God has a greater right [to help] them [than you, so do not judge or testify wrongfully to help them] and do not follow worldly desires to make you unfair. So, if you [wrongfully] change testimony or refuse it, [you should know that] God is certainly aware of what you do. [4:135]

يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا كُونُوا قَوَّامِينَ لِلَّهِ شُهَدَاءَ بِالْقِسْطِ وَلَا يَجْرِمَنَّكُمْ شَنَآنُ قَوْمٍ عَلَىٰ أَلَّا تَعْدِلُوا اعْدِلُوا هُوَ أَقْرَبُ لِلتَّقْوَىٰ وَاتَّقُوا اللَّهَ إِنَّ اللَّهَ خَبِيرٌ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ ‎

O You Who Believe! Be performers for the sake of God, [and] bear witness justly, and the hatred of the people should not make you unfair[, therefore,] be fair [because] it is closer to piety, and be pious; indeed, God knows best what you do. [5:8]

Justice Will Be Served on the Day of Judgment

The human being will receive the outcome of His deeds in detail. God will not oppress anyone even as much as a tiny particle; therefore, if someone performs a good act, God will reward him and give him a huge reward from Himself.

إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَا يَظْلِمُ مِثْقَالَ ذَرَّةٍ وَإِن تَكُ حَسَنَةً يُضَاعِفْهَا وَيُؤْتِ مِن لَّدُنْهُ أَجْرًا عَظِيمًا ‎

God never oppresses anyone even as much as a tiny particle, and if a good is performed, He will double it and give a huge reward from Himself. [4:40]

Every act, deed, word, and intention will be considered and fairly judged. No one can hide any deed, word, or intention on that day, the Day of Justice. For this reason, the Quran teaches the believers to be fearful of that day and the outcome of their deeds. On that day, no one can help man except God, so man should obey God in this world and be a submissive servant. 

يَا بُنَيَّ إِنَّهَا إِن تَكُ مِثْقَالَ حَبَّةٍ مِّنْ خَرْدَلٍ فَتَكُن فِي صَخْرَةٍ أَوْ فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ أَوْ فِي الْأَرْضِ يَأْتِ بِهَا اللَّهُ إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَطِيفٌ خَبِيرٌ

O my dear son! [God is All-Mighty and He knows all things even] if it be the weight of a mustard seed within a rock or in the heaven or on the earth. He will bring it out [to judge]. Indeed, He is Subtle, All-Aware.⁶

فَمَن يَعْمَلْ مِثْقَالَ ذَرَّةٍ خَيْرًا يَرَهُ ‎ فَمَن يَعْمَلْ مِثْقَالَ ذَرَّةٍ شرًا يَرَهُ  

Therefore, whoever performs [even] a tiny particle of a good deed, he will see it[s fruits]. And, whoever perpetrates a tiny particle of an evil deed he will see it[s consequences too].⁷

وَاتَّقُوا يَوْمًا لَّا تَجْزِي نَفْسٌ عَن نَّفْسٍ شَيْئًا وَلَا يُقْبَلُ مِنْهَا شَفَاعَةٌ وَلَا يُؤْخَذُ مِنْهَا عَدْلٌ وَلَا هُمْ يُنصَرُونَ ‏

Beware of a day when no one will be of help to another, neither intercession, nor ransom will be received from anyone, and they will not be helped.⁸

Conclusion

The Day of Judgment is the Day of Justice. No one will be oppressed, and nothing will be hidden or ignored. God will consider everything and everyone will be judged fairly. As a result, everyone will see and taste the outcome of their deeds, so friendship or unfair relationships will not be beneficial.
