In the name of Allah, the most compassionate, most merciful

O People! Be fearful of your Lord1 who created you from a single soul2 and created its mate from it3, and from them4 [created and] scattered many men and women on earth, and be fearful of God in whose name you demand [your rights] of one another, and [observe the rights of] relatives. Indeed, God is Ever-Watchful over you.

And give the orphans their property and do not replace the good with the bad [to keep the good for yourself and leave the bad part for the orphan], and do not consume their property [with] your own. Indeed, it is a great sin.

If you are fearful that you will not behave in a fair way towards the orphans, then marry [other women] who seem good to you, two, or three or four; and if you are fearful that you will not be able to treat them justly, then [it is better to] marry only one woman or [choose your wife from among your] slave-women. It is more likely that you will not behave unjustly.

And give the women their dowries as a gift, but if they were pleased with remitting some of it to you, then you are welcome to lawfully consume it.

Do not give your property to the feeble-minded [those who have much less intelligence than the average; the wealth] which God has given you to manage [their affairs]. And feed and clothe them from it, and speak kindly to them1.

[Before giving the property of the orphans back to them] test them until they reach the age of marriage2. If you see that they have reach the age of maturity, then give their property back to them, and do not consume their wealth lavishly and hurriedly before they reach maturity, and [the guardian] who is rich should abstain from taking [anything] of it, and whoever is poor, is allowed to take of it in a fair way [as a remuneration for his guardianship]. When you give their wealth back to them, take witness over them, [and], as a reckoner, God is enough.

The men have [a certain amount of] share in the property that their parents and near relatives leave behind, as well as the women [who] have a share in the heritage that their parents and near relatives leave behind, whether it be little or much. [This is] a specified share [by God].

And when you are sharing [the inheritance among yourself], if the relatives, orphans and the poor are present, provide them from it and speak kindly to them.

And those who fear that they may leave weak children after themselves should fear [mistreating orphans lest their weak children after their death experience the same fate], so they should observe taqwā, and they should speak justly.

Indeed, those who wrongfully consume the wealth of the orphans, [in fact], they swallow fire into their stomach, and they will enter the fierce fire.

God advises you concerning your children [when you die and leave wealth behind]: the male should receive similar to the share of two females. If the dead has only [two or] more than two daughters they should receive two thirds of the wealth, and if he has only one daughter, she should receive half of the wealth and each of his parents should receive a sixth of the wealth, if the deceased has a child. If he does not have a child and his parents are his only heirs, then his mother should receive the third, but if he has a brother [then] the mother will receive the sixth. ]You are only allowed to share the wealth] after it has been bequeathed, or debt that he owes to others are paid off. You do not know between your parents and children which of them are more beneficent for you, [so God prescribed for you this law and] it is your compulsory duty. Indeed, God is All-Knowing, All-Wise.

And you should receive half of what your wives have left behind if they do not have a child, but if they have a child you will receive a quarter of what they have left behind after paying off the bequests that have been made, or the debt she owes to others. The wives should receive a quarter of what you have left behind if you do not have a child, but if you have a child they can only receive one-eighth of that which you leave behind after paying off the bequests which you have made, or the debt that you owe to others, and if there is a man who has left only one brother or one sister, or there is a woman who has left only one maternal brother or maternal sister, each of them will receive one sixth, [but] if they have more than two maternal brothers or maternal sisters, then they will receive a third and share it among themselves after paying off the bequests which s/he has made, or the debt that s/he owes to others, without prejudice against the heirs. This a [compulsory] directive given by God. And God is All- Knowing and All-Forbearing.

These are the limits [which have been established by] God, and whoever obeys God and His messenger will be admitted into Heaven, through which rivers flow, and they will live there forever. And that is the great success.

And whoever disobeys God and His messenger and transgresses His limits, He will take him to the fire in which he will dwell [forever], then he will receive humiliating punishments.

And if any of your women commit an act of indecency, appeal to four eyewitnesses from among you against them [to prove their act of indecency], if they testify, then keep those women inside their house until they meet their death, or [until] God provides them with a way [of freedom].

And if the two [people] commit it from among you, [you should] punish them, so if they repent and reform, let them go. Indeed, God is All-Forgiving, All-Merciful.

The [chance of] repentance has only been given for those who commit sin in ignorance, then they repent quickly, so God will forgive them. Indeed, God is All-Knowing, All-Wise.

And the repentance is not accepted from those who commit sins until they [are going to] meet their death and say, “I repent now,” nor for those who die while they disbelieve. Indeed We have prepared a painful punishment for these people.

O You Who Believe! It has not been legalized for you to inherit women forcibly, and do not put them under pressure to take away a part of what you have given them, unless they commit flagrant indecency. And treat them kindly. If you hate them [you should know that it is possible] you hate something but God has placed much benefit in ;[ thus God wills to bring considerable benefits to you through what you hate].

If you want to marry another woman in place of [your] wife, and you have given one of them considerable wealth, then do not take [back] anything of it. Are you going to take it back through libeling and evident sin?

And how could you take it back while you enjoyed a spousal relationship with each other, and you gave them your solemn promise?

And do not marry those women whom your father had married, unless what it was before [Islam]. Indeed, it is an indecency, an offensive sin, and a wrongful path.

It is unlawful for you [to marry] your mothers, and your daughters, and your sisters, and your father’s sisters, and your mother’s sisters, and your brother’s daughters and your sister’s daughters, and your foster mothers, and your foster-sisters, and your mothers-in-law, and your step-daughters who are under your care, borne of your women with whom you have consummated your marriage. But if you did not consummate your marriage with them, then you are not sinful if you marry their daughters [and also, it is not lawful for you to marry] the wives of your son who is from your own blood, or have two sisters as [your] wives at the same time, except for what occurred in the past. Indeed, God is All-Forgiving, All-Merciful.

And [it is unlawful for you to marry] all married women, except the slave women whom you own [because they are considered to be divorced]. This is the law of God. It is lawful for you to marry the rest [beyond what has been mentioned]. Therefore, you are allowed to seek [to marry] them with your wealth in lawful marriage, and not debauchery. So when you have relations with them, give them their dowries as an obligation. You are not sinful if you arrive at an agreement after you have specified the dowries.

And he who cannot afford to marry free believing women, he is allowed to marry the believing slave women which he owns. God is aware of your belief. Some of you are in the same state as the other, so marry them with their master’s permission, and give their dowries with kindness. But those slave women with whom you marry should not have unlawful relationships with other men, [including] sex, indecency and friendship, so if they commit indecency, they will receive half of the punishment prescribed for the free woman. This law is for those men who fear to commit sexual sins, yet it is better for you if you exercise patience [against sins], and God is All-Forgiving, All-Merciful.

God wills to clarify [His law] for you and guide you to the [true] path of those who lived before you, [and He wills to forgive and] show mercy on you. [Indeed], God is All-Knowing, All-Wise.

And God wills to forgive [and show mercy on] you, but those who follow their lusts desire that you go far astray.

God wills to lighten your burden. And the human being has been created weak.

O You Who Believe! You are not allowed to consume your wealth wrongfully [nor earn wealth from illegal ways, but you are allowed to] trade [fairly] with mutual consent [to make profit], and do not kill yourselves1, because God is very merciful to you.

And whoever commits it in aggression and injustice, we will soon throw him into the fire. And that is easy for God.

If you restrain yourself from committing great sins which you have been forbidden, We will absolve you of your misdeeds and admit you into the noble gate.

And do not desire to possess what God has given out of His bounty to some of you over the others2. The men will receive a share from what they have earned, and women will receive a share from what they have earned. And ask God for His bounty. Indeed, God knows all things.

And We have appointed heirs to [the wealth, etc.] which parents, near relatives, and those with whom you have made an agreement3 leave [after their death]. Therefore, give them their shares. Indeed, God witnesses all things.

Men are in charge of women because of the advantages that God has given some of them over the other, and [because] they spend their wealth [for them to live]. Therefore, righteous women are obedient and keep the secrets [of their husbands] because God covers the secrets himself. If you fear [the consequences of] the bad and dishonest behavior of some women, you should give them [good] advice, [then if they continue their misdeeds] you should keep away from them in bed, [but if they continue to disregard], beat them1. If they obey, [then you are not allowed] to seek a way to wrong them. Indeed, God is Exalted, Great.

And if you fear a breach between them, then appoint [two judges to save their marriage], one judge from his family and another judge from her family, if these two [people]2 desire to reconcile, God will help them to reconcile. Indeed, God is All-Knowing, All-Aware.

And worship God and ascribe no partner to Him. And behave kindly towards [your] parents, relatives, orphans, the needy, your near neighbors, colleagues, far neighbors [strangers], travelers, and your slaves. Indeed, God does not like an arrogant who boasts.

Those who are parsimonious and advise people to be stingy and conceal what God has bestowed upon them out of His bounty [are wrongdoers], and God has prepared for the disbelievers a humiliating punishment.

And those who donate [with the intention] to show off to people, and they do not believe in God and the Last Day. And whomever Satan is his companion [he should know that] he is an evil companion.

[Why do they avoid belief?] If they have belief in God and the Last Day and spend of what God has given them out of His bounty what harm will come to them? God is fully aware of them.

God never oppresses anyone even as much as a tiny particle,3 and if a good is performed, He will double it and give a huge reward from Himself.

Therefore, how will it be when We will bring a witness out of every nation, and We will bring you as a witness to them [to testify against them]?

When those who disbelieved and disobeyed the Prophet will wish that they were levelled with the earth1 [but it is too late and] they [even] cannot conceal a word from God.

O You Who Believe! Do not perform prayer when you are intoxicated until you know what you say, nor [enter mosque] when you are in the state of Jinābah, except when you pass through, until you have washed [ghusl], and if you are sick or on a journey or you have come from the toilet, or you have touched women, but you do not find water [for ghusl], then lightly put your hand on clean soil, then wipe your face and hands. Indeed, God is All-Kind, All-Forgiving.

Have you ever seen those who were given knowledge of the Book, who they prefer error2 [, follow devils] and desire [to make] you go astray from the [straight] path!

And God knows better who your enemies are, and as a master God is enough, and as a helper God is enough.

Some of those who are Jews change [God’s] word from their [original] state and say, “We heard and disobeyed,” and, “Hear but do not listen,” and [they say] “Ra’ina”3 by turning their tongues in order to [change its meaning in order to] mock the religion, but if they had said, “We heard and obeyed, so hear and Unurnā [instead of Ra’inā],”4 it would have been better for them and more upright. But God cursed them because of their disbelief, and only a few of them have belief.

O Those Who Have Been Given the Book! Believe in what We have sent down to you which confirms which is with you [of God’s Book], before We damage [your] faces badly and turn them back [into the worst shape], or before We curse them as We cursed the Sabbathbreaker, and [you should know that] God’s command is carried out [with no hesitation].

Indeed, God does not forgive [the sin of] ascribing partners to Him, but He will forgive any other sin concerning whomever He wills. Whoever ascribes partners to God, he has certainly [lied against God and has] committed a great [and an unforgivable] sin.

Have you ever considered those who praise themselves as being purified? No, [it is wrong], God purifies whomever He wills, and they will not be wronged at all.

See how [blatantly] they lie against God. This is enough to make it be an evident sin.

Have you not seen those who have been given some [knowledge] of the Book? [But] they have belief in idols and false deities [tāghūt],1 and they say concerning the disbelievers, “These are more rightly-guided on true path than the believers.”

Those are the people whom God has cursed,2 and the one whom God has cursed you find no helper for him.

Or [do they suppose that] they have owned a share in the sovereignty? [If that were so], then they would give nothing to the people.

Or are they jealous of people due to what God has given them out of His bounty? Indeed, We have given the Book and wisdom to the Household of Abraham, and We have given them the great sovereignty.

So, some of them believed in it and some of them prevented [others from believing] in it. [Indeed,] the blaze of Hell is enough [to burn them].

Indeed, we will throw those who disbelieved in Our signs into the fire. As often as their skins are damaged by fire, We will replace their skins [with fresh ones to suffer pain] in order that they may taste the punishment. Indeed, God is All-Mighty, All-Wise.

And those who believe and perform good deeds, We will admit them to Heaven through which rivers flow [and they will live there] forever. They will have purified spouses there, and We will provide them with a [welcome and] extensive shade.

Indeed, God commanded you to give back trusts to their owners, and when you judge between people judge justly. Indeed, what God gives you of advice is good. Indeed, God is All-Hearing, All-Knowing.

O You Who Believe! Obey God and obey the messenger and those who are in authority among you. If you get involved in an argument about any matter, refer it to God and the messenger if you have belief in God and the Last Day. This is good and more favorable in the end.

Have you not considered those who imagine that they believe in [the teachings] which have been sent down to you and in [the teachings] which have been sent down to [the Prophets who lived] before you, [but] they ask the Taghūt1 to judge between them [when they have an argument] while they have been ordered to refuse to obey them? And Satan desires to lead them far astray.

And when they are told to refer to what God has sent down and to the Prophet, [then] you see that the hypocrites [stubbornly disregard and] turn away.

[But] how is it that when they are harmed because of [the wrong deeds] which they committed with their own hands, they come to you swearing by God [saying], “We only seek to bring kindness and benefits.”

They are the people whom God knows [exactly] what is in their hearts [and minds], so leave them alone, and provide them with advice, and speak to them concerning themselves with clear words.

And We sent down no messenger except [We commanded that] he must be obeyed by God’s permission. When they had wronged themselves1 then they would have come to you seeking God’s forgiveness and [if] the messenger would have prayed to God for their forgiveness, they would have found God All-Forgiving, All-Merciful.

No! By Your Lord! They will not believe until they take you [as their] judge when they dispute between themselves, then they do not resist against what you have decided [for them] and they willingly submit.

And if We had decreed upon them, “Kill yourselves,” or “Leave your homes,” then only a few of them would have obeyed. But if they obeyed what they are offered of advice, it would be better for them and it would be more strengthening [of their belief].

And then We would have provided them with huge rewards from Us.

And we would have certainly guided them to the right path.

And whoever obeys God and the messenger, they are with the Prophets, the truthful, the martyrs and the righteous upon whom God has bestowed favors. Indeed, they are good companions.

That is the bounty [which has been bestowed upon you] from God, and as a knower God is enough.

O You Who Believe! Take your precautions and move forward in separated groups or altogether.

And indeed, there are [hypocrites] among you who are in breach of their duty, and if disaster strikes you, he would say, “God has bestowed upon me a bounty since I was not a martyr with them.”

But if you are given bounty by God, he would certainly say, as if there was no affection between you and them, “I wish I was among them, so I could have achieved a great victory.”

Those who sell the life of this world for the life of the Hereafter [and prefer to gain the heaven they] should fight in God’s path, and whoever fights in God’s path and is killed or overcome, We will provide him with a huge reward.

Why would you not fight in God’s path [to save] the feeble men, women and children who say, “O Our Lord! Bring us out of this town whose people are oppressors, and bestow upon us a guardian from Yourself , and bestow upon us a helper from Yourself.”

Those who believe fight in God’s path and those who disbelieve fight in the path of the false deity. So fight against the friends of Satan. Indeed, Satan’s plot is weak [and easily foiled].

Have you ever seen those when they were told, “Restrain yourself [from fighting, so] perform prayer and give zakāt,” [they disregarded, and said We should fight], but when they were commanded to fight [in God’s path], some of them were fearful of people, as if they fear God or were even more afraid, and they said, “O Our Lord, why have you commanded us to fight? Why did you not delay it until a later date?” Say the enjoyment of this world is little and the life of the Hereafter is better for those who are fear God, and you will not be wronged at all.

Wherever you may be, your death will come [to you] even if you were in fortified towers. And if good things happen to them, they say, “It is from God,” but if evil things happen to them, they say, “It comes from you.” Say[to all of them], “Everything comes from God.” What is wrong with these people that they do not understand words [of God]?

What comes to you of the good things is from God but what comes to you of the evil things is from yourself; [it is the consequences of your own wrong deeds or mismanagement], and We have sent you to the people as a messenger; as a witness, God is enough.

Whoever obeys the messenger; indeed, he has obeyed God, and whoever turns away [and disobeys], We have not sent you to watch over them [nor you are responsible for their deeds].

And they say, “[We owe] obedience [to you],” but when they leave you, a group of them secretly plot over the night, [to perform other than] what you say, and God records what they plot [against you overnight]. Therefore, turn away them and trust in God, and as a trustee God is enough.

Will they not think about the Qur’ān? If this Qur’ān had been sent down from [someone] other than God, indeed, you would have found in it many contradictions.

When they receive news of security or terror, they spread it around but [it would have been better] if they had referred it to the messenger, and the authority among them, then the ones who [can] draw correct conclusions from it would have known about it. And if God had not shown His mercy and bounty on you, indeed, you certainly would have followed Satan, except a few of you.

And fight in God’s path. You are responsible only for yourself [and your own deeds, but you should] urge the believers [to fight in God’s path thus] He may prevent the might of disbelievers [from harming you], and God is the Mightier and the Severest in punishment.

Whoever intercedes for a good [deed] will receive a share of its reward, and whoever intercedes in wrongness will share the consequences of it [too]. God has authority over all things.

And respond [warmly] with a better greeting when you are greeted, or return [the greeting in the same way you received] it. Indeed, God takes account of all things.

Allah! There is no god but Him. He will certainly gather you on the Day of Judgment, which is beyond doubt. Who is more truthful than Him in statement?

88. What has divided you into two groups about [the matter of] the hypocrites? While God has overthrown them due to what they committed, do you wish to guide those whom God has sent astray? And whomever God has sent astray you will never find a path [of escape] for him1.

They wish that you would give up [your] belief, like they abandoned their belief, so that you would become alike. Therefore, do not befriend any of them until they migrate in God’s path [and repent], but if they turn away, then take them and kill them wherever you find them, and do not take them as a friend nor a helper.

Except those [disbelievers] who join the people with whom you have made a treaty, or those disbelievers who come to you while they have truly become tired of fighting you or fighting their own people. And if God had wished, He would have given them power over you, then they certainly would have fought you. Therefore, if they withdraw from fighting and are unwilling to be in war with you and offer you peace, then God does not permit you to fight them.

You will see other [groups of hypocrites] who long to have security from you and security from their own people, [but] whenever they find the opportunity, they immediately intend to create Fitnah [and present hostilities towards Muslims]. If they do not withdraw from fighting, and they do not offer you peace, nor hold their hands [from doing evil deeds against you], then seize and kill them wherever you find them. Those are the people whom We have given you lawful authority against.

A believer must not [deliberately] kill a believer unless it be in error. And whoever accidentally kills a believer should set free a believing slave and pay the blood money to the family of the victim, unless they forgo it [for the pleasure of God]. And if the person who has been killed belongs to your enemy, but he is a believer, then you should only set a believing slave free. And if the victim belongs to the community with whom you have made a treaty with, you should pay blood money to his family and set a believing slave free. Whoever is not able [to set a believing slave free], he must fast two successive months, which is a repentance shown by God, and God is All-Knowing, All-Wise.

And whoever deliberately kills a believer, his penalty is Hell, [so] he will dwell there forever, and God will be wrathful at him and He will curse him,1 and a great punishment has been prepared for him.

O You Who Believe! When you go forth in God’s path, [you should investigate in order to] clarify [matters]. Therefore, do not say to one who offers you peace, “You are an unbeliever,” in order to achieve [the gains of the] present life. Indeed, plenteous treasures are with God. You were like [the disbelievers] before, but God has bestowed a favor upon you [and guided you to the straight path]. Therefore, [you must not wrong any one and you should] seek to clarify the matter. Indeed, God is fully aware of what you perform.

Those believers who have not been [severely] injured and stay back [from battle] are not equal to those believers who wage jihad in God’s path with their wealth and lives. God has preferred [to give a higher] rank for those who wage jihad with their wealth and lives over those who sit back. God has promised [to grant] a good reward to both groups [of the believers] but He has preferred those who wage jihad over those who sit back with huge reward.

[These are] degrees of ranks from Him and forgiveness and mercy. God is All-Forgiving, All-Merciful.

Indeed, [when death comes to the disbelievers and] the angels take the souls of [wrongdoers] who wronged themselves away. The angels will say [to them] “what was your state [and attitude about religion]? They will reply, “We were oppressed on earth [so we could not gain knowledge and we could not perform our duties]. The angels will say, “Was God’s earth not big enough to migrate [, and acquire true knowledge]?” Their abode will be hell, which is an evil [path and] destination.

Except the [feeble and the] oppressed men, women and children, who are not able to come up with a plan and work out a solution [to emigrate].

So God may forgive them for God is All-Pardoning, All-Forgiving.

And whoever emigrates in God’s path [to gain knowledge in order to seek God’s pleasure] will find many accommodations and abundances on earth, and whoever leaves his home emigrating towards God and His messenger, then he meets his death, he will be rewarded by God, and God is All-Forgiving, All-Merciful.

And when you travel on earth, you are not sinful if you to shorten the prayer, if you are fearful that the disbelievers may harm you. Indeed, the disbelievers are your manifest enemy.

And when you are among them and you lead the prayer for them, a group of them should pray with you carrying their weapons. When you prostrate [and finish prayer], they should go back [and fight against the enemy], and another group which has not prayed yet should come and pray with you, and they should take precaution and arms [because] the disbelievers desire that you neglect your arms and baggage so they may suddenly attack you [and put an end to your life]; but if you are troubled by rain or you are sick you are allowed to lay aside your arms, but you should take precaution. Indeed, God has prepared a humiliating punishment for the disbelievers.

And when you finish the prayer, [it is recommended to] remember God [in all conditions whether] standing, sitting, and lying down, so when you feel safe, perform the prayer [in the normal way]. Indeed, the prayer is a compulsory deed in specified times for the believers.

And do not demonstrate weakness in pursuit of [these people]; if you suffer [from wars, you should know that] they also suffer like you suffer. While you are hoping for God [’s mercy] they do not see hope. And God is All-Knowing, All-Wise.

Indeed, We have truthfully sent down to you the Book, to judge between the people on the basis of which God has disclosed to you. [Therefore, judge between them fairly] and do not protect the traitors.

And pray to God for forgiveness. Indeed, God is All-Forgiving, All-Merciful.

Do not plead [to protect] those who betray1 themselves. Indeed, God does not like those who are treacherous and sinful.

They conceal [their wrong deeds] from people but they do not conceal it from God,2 and He is with them [and sees] when they spend the nights speaking over [the issues] with which He is not pleased. And God surrounds [with His knowledge] what you perform.

O You are those who plead for them in their life of the world, so who will protect them against God on the Day of Judgment, and who will defend them?

And whoever commits an evil deed or wrongs himself, then prays to God for forgiveness, he will find God All-Forgiving, All-Merciful.

And whoever commits a wrong deed or a sin, he certainly has wronged himself, and God is All-Knowing, All-Wise.

And whoever commits a wrong deed or sin, and then blames an innocent person [for what he has not committed] is guilty of malicious gossip, which is an obvious sin.

If there had not been the grace and mercy which He has bestowed on you, indeed, a group of disbelievers could have led you astray, but only they will mislead themselves, and they will not [be able] to cause any harm to you. And God has sent down to you the Book and the wisdom and has taught you what you did not know. [Indeed,] God has bestowed on you a great bounty.

Most of their secret talks bring no benefit [or goodness to them] unless they enjoin charity, righteousness, and reconciliation between people, and anyone who does it to gain the pleasure of God, We will provide him with a huge reward.

And whoever opposes the messenger and follows a path of non- believers after he received clear guidance, We will take him to the path he has turned to 1and We will throw him into hell, which is an evil destination.

Indeed, God does not forgive [the sin of] ascribing a partner to Him, and He forgives [all sins] other than that. He forgives whomever He wills [, so you should know that] whoever ascribes a partner to Him has certainly gone far astray.

Only they worship female [idols] instead of Him, and only they worship a rebellious Satan.

God cursed him,1[because he displayed arrogance and went wrong] and Satan replied, “I will take from your servants, an appointed portion. [ to lead them astray].”

[Satan said to God,] “And I will certainly lead them astray, and I will certainly incite them by their desires [for committing wrong deeds], and I will certainly motivate them to cut the ears of cattle, and I will certainly stimulate them to alter God’s creation”; and whoever chooses Satan as a friend instead of God [and obeys him] has clearly sustained a total loss [on his deal].

Satan gives them [false] promises, and stirs in them desires [for committing wrong deeds]. Satan’s promises are only deception.

Their abode is hell, and they will find no way to escape [out of it].

And those who believe and perform good deeds, We will admit them into the garden through which rivers flow. They will live there forever. [Indeed,] God’s promise is true. Who is more truthful than God in speech?

[Divine system of reward and punishment is not changed] neither with your desires nor with the desires of the People of the Book, [so] whoever commits a wrong deed will be punished because of it, and there will be no guardian or helper for him except God.

And whoever performs good deeds, whether male or female, while he is a believer, such [is allowed to] enter paradise. And they will not be wronged at all.

And whose religion is better than one who submits his will to God, performs good deeds and follows the creed of Abraham who followed truth; indeed, God chose Abraham as His khalīl.

And all things which exist in the heavens and on the earth belongs to God. God encompasses all things.

And they ask you about the [law of] women, say, “God answers you about them ,and about the [law of their heritage] recited to you in the Book, and about the orphan girls which you do not give them that which is prescribed for them, and you desire to marry them, [and about] the weak children.” Treat orphans justly, and [know that] God is fully aware of what you do of good deeds.

And if a woman is fearful of bad behavior or desertion from her husband, they are allowed to seek reconciliation between them and reconciliation is better, [even though] souls desire to satisfy greed. [But you should know that if you resist against your worldly desires and] perform good deeds and observe taqwā [you will be rewarded with God.] indeed, God is fully aware of what you perform.

And you will not be able to treat fairly between [your] wives, even though you desire to do so. Therefore, do not desert one of them, leaving her in suspense [to remain alone, while you pay attention to another wife], but if you seek reconciliation and observe taqwā [is better for you]. Indeed, God is All-Forgiving, All-Merciful.

But if they separate, God will profusely compensate for each of them out of His graciousness, and God is All- Gracious and All-Wise.

Whatever exists in the Heavens and in the earth belong to God. Indeed, We have provided you and the People of the Book with advice that you should observe taqwā, but if you abandon your belief [you should know that] what exists in the Heavens and in the earth belong to God, and God is-Self- Sufficient, All- Praised.

And whatever exists in the Heavens and on the earth all belongs to God. As a trustee, God is enough.

[O People! You should know that] if God wills, He can take you away and bring other people [instead of you], and God has power to do so.

Whoever desires [to receive] the rewards of this world, [he should know that] the rewards of this world and Hereafter are with God, and God is All-Hearing, All-Wise.

You Who Believe! Be maintainers of justice [and judge fairly] and be [rightful] witnesses for [the sake of] God [when you testify], even though it be against yourselves, your parents, and near relatives, [because] if they are rich or poor God has a greater right [to help] them [than you, so do not judge or testify wrongfully to help them] and do not follow worldly desires to make you unfair. So if you [wrongfully] change testimony or refuse it, [you should know that] God is certainly aware of what you do.

O You Who Believe! Believe in God, His Messenger, and the Book which has been sent down to His messenger, and the Book which has been sent down before. And [know that] whoever disbelieves in God, His angels, His Books, His messengers, and the Last Day has gone far astray.

Indeed, those who believe [but] then they abandon belief and [again] they believe, and then lose belief and intensify [their] disbelief, neither will God forgive them, nor will He guide them to a path [prosperity].

Inform the hypocrites that they will receive a severe chastisement.

Those who choose the disbelievers as their allies instead of believers! Do they desire to receive honor through them? Indeed, all honor belongs to God.

And indeed, God has sent down to you in the Book that when you hear God’s signs are rejected and derided do not sit with them [who do so] until they engage in other talk, [but if you do not leave them] you would be like them, and God certainly will gather all of the hypocrites and disbelievers [together] in hell.

They wait for [a disaster to strike] you, but if God gives you a victory they say [to you], “Are we not with you?” And if the disbelievers achieve a success they say [to them], “Had we not persuaded you [to be steadfast] and did we not protect you against the believers? [So we should receive a share with you].” God will judge between you on the Day of Judgment, and God never gives the disbeliever any way to [overcome] the believers.

Indeed, the hypocrites [imagine that they can] trick God, whereas He is the one who comes up with a plan [against] them [because He gives them time for their sins until they enter Hell].When they stand up to pray they do it lazily and show off to people, and they do remember God a little.

[The hypocrites] wave between that [and those]; neither do they choose this nor do they choose that [they only follow their worldly desires and seek to make a profit, so they should know that they have gone astray], and whoever God1 leads astray, you never find a path [of escape] for him.

O You Who Believe! Do not choose disbelievers as [allies nor confidential] friend1 instead of the believers. Do you desire to provide God with a clear proof against you?

Indeed, the hypocrites will be in the lowest depths of the fire, and they will have no helper [to save them].

But those who repent, reform, keep a firm hold on God, and make their religion exclusive to God [are prosperous] will be with the believers, and God will provide the believers with a huge reward.

Why should God punish you if you give thanks and have belief? [Indeed,] God is All-Appreciative, All-Knowing.

God does not like disclosing the wrong deeds [of the others], unless by the oppressed [who is allowed to speak against the oppressor2], and God is All-Hearing, All-Knowing.

If you disclose good deeds or conceal them, or forgive the evil [deeds of the others God knows], indeed, God is All-Pardoning, and All-Mighty.

Indeed, those who disbelieve in God and His messengers and [attempt to] separate between God and His messengers, [that is], they say we believe in some of them and disbelieve in others, and they seek to find a way in between.

They are truly disbelievers, and We have prepared for the disbelievers a humiliating chastisement.

And those who believe in God and His messengers and make no distinction between them [and believe that all are God’s messengers], He will give their rewards. Indeed, God is All-Forgiving, All-Merciful.

The People of the Book ask you to bring down to them a Book from Heaven. Indeed, they asked Moses something greater and told him, “Show us God openly,” so thunderbolt struck them because of their wrong deeds [but they did not repent, and] then they chose the Calf [as God] after they were provided with clear signs. So We forgave this and We have provided Moses with clear authority.

And We raised the mount of Tūr above them because of their covenant, and We said to them, “Enter the gate prostrating,” and said to them, “Do not violate the Sabbath” and We made with them a solemn covenant.

Then, because of [their wrong deeds, such as] breaking their covenant, disbelieving in God’s signs, killing the Prophets wrongfully, and their words, “Our hearts have been covered, [so we cannot understand your teachings]. No! God set a seal on their hearts because of their disbelief; so only a few people among them believe.

And because of their disbelief and their [evil] words against Mary, [which was a] tremendous malicious gossip.

And their words, “We have killed the Messiah, Jesus, son of Mary, God’s messenger,” and [they should know that] neither did they kill him, nor did they crucify him, but it appeared to them so. Indeed, those who differ concerning it are in doubt about the matter, and they have no knowledge about it; [in fact], they only guess. Indeed, they did not kill the Messiah.

But God raised him up unto Himself; [indeed,] God is All-Mighty, All-Wise.

And all the People of the Book certainly will have belief in him1 before his death, and he will testify against them on the Day of Judgment.

Because of the Jew’s wrongdoing and because they prevented many people from God’s path, We forbade them [some] good things which were permitted to them before.

And because of exercising usury which was forbidden to take, and consuming the wealth of people wrongfully, and We have prepared a severe punishment for the disbelievers among them.

But those who have been rooted in knowledge among them, and the believers who have belief in what has been sent down to you and what was sent down before you, and those who perform the prayer and give zakāt, and the believers in God and the last Days; We will give a huge reward to them.

Indeed, We have revealed to you as We revealed to Noah and the Prophets after Noah, and We have revealed to Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, the tribes, Jesus, Job, Jonah, Aaron, and Solomon, and We sent down to David the Psalms.

And the messengers We have told you about before and the messengers We have not told you about [are all God’s messengers], and God [especially] spoke to Moses.

[We sent down] the messengers who were givers of good news and warners lest people argue against God [nor they make excuses for their disobedience] after the messengers. [Indeed,] God is All-Mighty, AllWise.

But God bears witness to what He has sent down to you [and] He has sent it down with His knowledge, and the angels also bear witness [to its truthfulness], and as a witness, God is enough.

Indeed, those who disbelieve and prevent [people] from God’s path, they have certainly gone far astray.

Indeed, those who disbelieved and wronged, God will not forgive them, and He will not guide them to a path.

But the path of Hell, wherein they will dwell forever and that is easy for God [to do].

O People! [You should know that], indeed, the messenger brought you the truth from your Lord, so if you have belief in him, it will be better for you, but if you abandon belief, [you will lose yourselves because God does not need you, and] what exists in Heaven and on earth belongs to God, and God is All-Knowing, All-Wise.

O People of the Book! Do not exaggerate in your religion, and only attribute truth to God. Indeed, the Messiah, Jesus, son of Mary, is only God’s messenger and His word1 which God granted to Mary, and a spirit from Him so believe in God, His messengers and [give up exaggeration concerning your religion, therefore,] do not say [that God is a] trinity. If you give up [this false belief] it is better for you [because] God [certainly] is the [absolute] Lord, the One. He is too glorious to have a child2, and whatever exists in the Heavens and the earth belongs to God, and as a trustee, God is enough.

The Messiah never disdains to be God’s servant, nor do the angels who are close to God, and whoever disdains to be His servant and shows arrogance, He will gather all of them to Him [on the Day of Judgment].

But those who believe and perform good deeds, their rewards will be paid in full and God will increase [their rewards] out of his bounty, except those who disdain [to worship God] and show arrogance; therefore, God will severely punish them and they will find no guardian nor helper [to protect] them other than God.

O People! Indeed, a proof from your Lord has come to you and We have sent down to you a clear light.

So those who have belief in God and firmly hold on to Him, He will admit them into His mercy and bounty, and He will guide them towards Him, a straight path.

They ask you. Say, “God answers your question concerning alkalālah1: if a man who has no child [or parent] dies and leaves a sister, she receives half the heritage, and he also would inherit from her if she dies and leaves no children [or parents]. And if there are two sisters they will receive two-thirds of the heritage, but if they are brothers and sisters the male will receive the share of two females. God clarifies [His law] for you in order that you may not go astray, and God knows all things.

Virtues and Benefits of Reciting Surah Nisa’

The Noble Prophet, Muhammad (peace be upon him and his progeny) has said:

Whoever recites surah Nisa’ it is as though he has given alms for all the believers who have left an inheritance, and its reward is like freeing a slave. Such a person will be distanced from polytheism and shirk and God will forgive him his sins.

Another narration from an Infallible quotes him as saying that whoever recites surah Nisa’ on Fridays, he will be safe from the pressure of the grave.

Themes in Surah Nisa’

Surah Nisa’ talks about many subjects such as:

  • Marriage
  • Inheritance
  • Rulings of prayer, jihad, and bearing witness
  • People of the Book
  • Invitation to faith and justice
  • Past nations
  • The rights and duties of the members of society
  • Warning about hypocrites

Historical Accounts in Surah Nisa’

One of the characteristics of surah Nisa’ is that it tells stories of the past that we can learn many lessons from them. For example, surah Nisa’ talks about:

  • Satan’s oath to mislead mankind
  • The transgression of the Children of Israel including:
    • Asking Moses to show God to them
    • Worshipping the statue of a calf
    • The covenant of the mountain (Ṭūr)
    • Covenant of not violating the Sabbath
    • Murdering of prophets at the hands of the Israelites
    • Slandering Mary
    • Claiming to having killed Jesus son of Mary

Satan’s Oath to Mislead Mankind

Whom Allah has cursed, and who said, ‘I will surely take of Your servants a settled share,

and I will lead them astray and give them [false] hopes, and prompt them to slit the ears of cattle, and I will prompt them to alter Allah’s creation.’ Whoever takes Satan as a guardian instead of Allah has certainly incurred a manifest loss.

He makes them promises and gives them [false] hopes, yet Satan does not promise them anything but delusion.

Indeed, Satan is the sworn enemy of man. He holds a very long grudge against human beings because he was told to prostrate before a human being that he considered inferior to himself, saying he was made from fire while Adam was made from a foul-smelling and aging mud.

Therefore, Satan gathers all his forces and uses all his power to mislead us from the straight path. He uses different stratagems for this purpose. The most obvious one is decorating evil deeds and making them enjoyable so we get close to them.

However, Satan has no authority over those who devote themselves to God, and also those who have been purified by God, meaning the infallibles including God’s prophets and other infallibles such as Lady Mary, Lady Fatimah, and the successors to the Noble Prophet.

Transgression of the Children of Israel in Surah Nisa’

The People of the Book ask you to bring down for them a Book from the sky. Certainly they asked Moses for [something] greater than that, for they said, ‘Show us Allah visibly,’ whereat a thunderbolt seized them for their wrongdoing. Then they took up the Calf [for worship], after all the manifest proofs that had come to them. Yet We excused that, and We gave Moses a manifest authority.

The People of the Book at the time of the Prophet did not want to believe in him and were looking for excuses. They said, bring a Divine book from the sky that is already written and bound. God revealed this verse to the Prophet and told the Prophet to tell them that the people of Moses had asked for something greater than this.

What you are asking for is much lesser. In other words, God is saying: They asked something greater, but ended up worshipping a calf. There is no guarantee that if God does bring down a book from the sky you will believe in Muhammad.

The Two Covenants of the Israelites

And We raised the Mount above them for the sake of their covenant, and We said to them, ‘Enter the gate prostrating’ and We said to them, ‘Do not violate the Sabbath,’ and We took from them a solemn covenant.

God wanted to scare the Israelites not to transgress. Therefore, He made a specific mountain, some say it was Mount Sinai raise over their head like a canopy, that if they disobey and bother Prophet Moses, it would crumble on  their heads. This, however, did not happen and it was more like a covenant that God made with them. The second covenant was that they should not violate the Sabbath, the holy day which was to be dedicated to the worship of God.

The Israelites Break Their Covenants in Surah Nisa’

Then because of their breaking their covenant, their defiance of Allah’s signs, their killing of the prophets unjustly and for their saying, ‘Our hearts are uncircumcised’… Indeed, Allah has set a seal on them for their unfaith, so they do not have faith except a few.

The People of Moses broke their covenant with God and did all kinds of injustice such as killing their own prophets. God put a seal on their hearts. Therefore, they are stubborn and do not believe in Islam except a few of them. In other words, they are biased in favor of their own beliefs and religion which has been altered and adulterated by themselves.

The Israelites’ Calumny Against Mary

And for their faithlessness, and their uttering a monstrous calumny against Mary,

What the Israelites said about Mary was blasphemous and a lie. They accused a chaste and pure women whom everyone knew for her piety, purity, and chastity of indecency. They even would see so many miracles from Jesus, yet they still stubbornly denied him and called him a magician.

Therefore, God sealed their hearts, so faith would never enter it. Of course, if they repented and let go of their stubbornness, God would remove that seal and they could believe. That is why the previous verse says except a few.

Jesus Was not Killed

And for their saying, ‘We killed the Messiah, Jesus son of Mary, the apostle of Allah’—though they did not kill him nor did they crucify him, but so it was made to appear to them. Indeed those who differ concerning him are surely in doubt about him: they do not have any knowledge of that beyond following conjectures, and certainly, they did not kill him.

Indeed, Allah raised him up toward Himself, and Allah is all-mighty, all-wise.

There were a group of people among the Children of Israel who wanted to get rid of Jesus Christ. Therefore, they joined hands with the Romans to carry out this plan. However, God had willed that Jesus be safe from their plots.

Therefore, God raised Jesus to the heavens and instead made the one who showed the Romans Jesus’ hideout to appear just like Jesus. Then, they took him and crucified him instead of Jesus. Even some of Jesus’ followers thought Jesus had been crucified.

Jesus will return to the earth in the end time and will assist the Mahdi in forming a new world order based on justice and equity.

Famous Verses of Surah Nisa’

There are several famous verses in surah Nisa’ including the verses of:

  • Qinṭār (قِنطار [quintal])
  • Maḥārim (مَحارِم [mahram relatives])
  • Ul al-Amr (اولوالامر [those vested with authority])
  • Verse of women being under the protection and management of men (Qawwamiyyah [
  • Nafy al-Sabīl (نفي السَبیل [negation of way])
  • Tayammum (تيّمم [dry ritual purification])

Surah Nisa’: Verse of Qinṭār

If you desire to take a wife in place of another, and you have given one of them a quintal [of gold], do not take anything away from it. Would you take it by way of calumny and flagrant sin?!

The Quran respects women’s rights. If someone was married to a woman and had given her a lot of money or wealth, if that person decides to divorce her and marry another wife, he is not allowed to take that great amount of money from his ex-wife. In fact, the verse is about the dowry or mahr of women and is saying: Do not try to take it away from her by accusing her of indecency and by force as it is a great sin.

Surah Nisa’: Verse of Maḥārim

Forbidden to you are your mothers, your daughters and your sisters, your paternal aunts and your maternal aunts, your brother’s daughters and your sister’s daughters, your [foster-]mothers who have suckled you and your sisters through fosterage, your wives’ mothers, and your stepdaughters who are under your care [born] of the wives whom you have gone into—but if you have not gone into them there is no sin upon you—and the wives of your sons who are from your own loins, and that you should marry two sisters at one time—excluding what is already past; indeed Allah is all-forgiving, all-merciful—

This verse fully explains who the ones one is mahram to are and one is not allowed to marry. These women are allowed to show some parts of their zīnah (زینة) or adornments to the men they are related to, such as their hair. However, they must cover certain other parts of their body from such men and they are only allowed to show their entire zīnah to their husbands.

What is unique in this verse is that one’s wet nurse is also mahram to one, and also other girls who were suckled by the same wet nurse. Quran calls them raḍā‘ī (رَضاعي) mothers and sisters. So there are three categories of mahrams:

  • By way of nasab (نَسَب) meaning being related to that person
  • Sabab (سَبَب) meaning when one becomes mahram to someone through marriage such as one’s mother-in-law
  • Raḍā(رَضاع) meaning by being suckled by a wet nurse

Surah Nisa’: Verse of Tayammum

O you who have faith! Do not approach prayer when you are intoxicated, [not] until you know what you are saying, nor [enter mosques] in the state of ritual impurity until you have washed yourselves, except while passing through. But if you are sick or on a journey, or any of you has come from the toilet, or you have touched women, and you cannot find water, then make your ablution on clean ground and wipe a part of your faces and your hands. Indeed Allah is all-excusing, all-forgiving.

Tayammum is a form of dry ablution using pure dust, when one cannot find water to perform ablution or ghusl. Sometimes, tayammum is done when there is not enough time to do ablution or ghusl because doing so would take too long and the time of prayer would pass and become qaḍā (قضاء). For more information on how to do tayammum refer to the article Salat in the Quran.

Surah Nisa’: Verse of Ul al-Amr

O you who have faith! Obey Allah and obey the Apostle and those vested with authority among you. And if you dispute concerning anything, refer it to Allah and the Apostle, if you have faith in Allah and the Last Day. That is better and more favourable in outcome.

This verse calls upon all Muslims to obey God, the Prophet, and those vested with authority among them. Exegetes have concluded that obedience to the Prophet and those vested with authority is just like obedience to God. Therefore, the Prophet and the Ul al-Amr must be infallible. That is why there are many narrations that state that the Ul al-Amr are the infallible successors to the Prophet from among his Ahlul Bait.

Verse of Women Being Under Management of Men in Surah Nisa’

Men are the managers of women, because of the advantage Allah has granted some of them over others, and by virtue of their spending out of their wealth. Righteous women are obedient and watchful in the absence [of their husbands] in guarding what Allah has enjoined [them] to guard. As for those [wives] whose misconduct you fear, [first] advise them, and [if ineffective] keep away from them in the bed, and [as the last resort] beat them. Then if they obey you, do not seek any course [of action] against them. Indeed Allah is all-exalted, all-great.

It is only natural that men as the stronger gender be the managers and protectors of women. The verse also talks about nushūz (نشوز) of women which roughly translates as misconduct. However, exegetes have said that it is not any kind of misconduct, but rather it is:

  • Not submitting to their husbands sexually
  • Leaving the house without their permission
  • Not observing certain rights that pertain to the husband

However, this verse does not mean that a man can beat her wife and bruise her anytime he feels that she is not listening to him. It is mostly relevant to women’s not submitting sexually to their husbands because that is the greatest right that a man has over his wife.

Verse of Negation of Way in Surah Nisa’

And Allah will never provide the faithless any way [to prevail] over the faithful.

This last part of verse 141 is called the verse of nafy al-sabīl or negation of way. The verse negates any kind of superiority of disbelievers over believers and asks believers to confront the authoritarianism of disbelievers. Verse 144 of the same surah asks us not to befriend the disbelievers similar to the above verse:

O you who have faith! Do not take the faithless for friends instead of the faithful. Do you wish to give Allah a clear sanction against yourselves?

Verses Relevant to Islamic Rulings

Surah Nisa’ mostly talks about laws that pertain to women such as:

  • Marriage and topics relevant to it such as:
    • Mahr (dowry/dower)
    • Impermissible marriages
    • Permissible marriages
    • Temporary marriage
    • Polygamy
  • Divorce
  • Inheritance

Verse of Mahr in Surah Nisa’

Give women their dowries, handing it over to them; but if they remit anything of it of their own accord, then consume it as [something] lawful and wholesome.

The dowry of a woman aka mahr (مَهر) or according to the Quran ṣaduqah (صَدُقَة) is a sign of love, respect, and bond with the woman a man is marrying. According to the Islamic sharia, the dowry of a woman must be given to her either when she asks for it or when the husband has the ability to pay it.

One of these two conditions is predetermined before the marriage takes place. Furthermore, the woman can remit her dowry or give back some or the whole of it to the husband. God has allowed the man to use that money and has made it halal (lawful).

Impermissible Marriages in Surah Nisa’

Do not marry any of the women whom your fathers had married, excluding what is already past. That is indeed an indecency, an outrage and an evil course.

It is forbidden for men to marry the wives of their fathers after either their fathers have died or they have gotten divorced. The part of the verse which states excluding what is already past means except those marriages that took place before this decree was issued.

Moreover, the verse of maḥārim which was mentioned stated to whom one is not allowed to get married.

Verse of Temporary Marriage in Surah Nisa’

As to others than these, it is lawful for you to seek [temporary union with them] with your wealth, in wedlock, not in license. For the enjoyment you have had from them thereby, give them their dowries, by way of settlement, and there is no sin upon you in what you may agree upon after the settlement. Indeed Allah is all-knowing, all-wise.

Temporary marriage (مُتعَة) is a kind of permissible marriage where the couples predetermine a fixed time for their marriage as in hours, days, weeks, months, or even years. The verse clearly states that the dowry must be paid for this marriage to be valid. However, temporary marriage in the Islamic sharia has certain rulings.

First of all, girls who are virgins must ask for their fathers’ permission before being married to a man or boy. However, those who are not virgins, such as widows and those who have divorced and are not virgins can practice temporary marriage of their own accord.

Verse of Polygamy in Surah Nisa’

If you fear that you may not deal justly with the orphans, then marry [other] women that you like, two, three, or four. But if you fear that you may not treat them fairly, then [marry only] one, or [marry from among] your slave-women. That makes it likelier that you will not be unfair.

In Islam, a man is allowed to marry up to four permanent wives. Nowadays, marrying more than one wife is becoming less common due to changes in cultures and customs in certain Muslim countries. However, this law is very logical when we consider what was going on at the time of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him and his progeny).

The mortality rate of males was much higher due to men being killed in battles or due to difficult working conditions. Therefore, many women would be widowed and many children orphaned.

Naturally, these women needed a man to take care of them and provide for them. Because women were greater in number than men, it was only natural that a man could marry more than one wife. However, the condition has been laid down in this verse and that is justice and fairness.

God only allows polygamy if justice is done among the wives and ones is not preferred to the other. That is why at the end of the verse God says that if you think you will not be fair among them then marry only one wife.

Verse of Divorce in Surah Nisa’

If a woman fears from her husband misconduct or desertion, there is no sin upon the couple if they reach a reconciliation between themselves; and reconcilement is better. The souls are prone to greed; but if you are virtuous and Godwary, Allah is indeed well aware of what you do.

) You will not be able to be fair between wives, even if you are eager to do so. Yet do not turn away from one altogether, leaving her as if in a suspense. But if you are conciliatory and Godwary, Allah is indeed all-forgiving, all-merciful.

But if they separate, Allah will suffice each of them out of His bounty, and Allah is all-bounteous, all-wise.

God recommends spouses to put aside their differences and reconcile with each other. This means that they may have to tolerate some of their behavior and attitudes that they do not like. God also says you will never be able to maintain fairness among your wives even if you really want to. However, this does not mean that you should totally forget about one of your wives and leave her in a suspense.

Of course, by not being able to be fair here, exegetes have said that what God means is your love for your spouses can never be equal.

In other words, at the end of the day, you will love one spouse more than the other. However, love is something in the heart, you can still be fair to all of them by providing for them equally and visiting them and dedicating equal periods of time to each one of them. Then if you still cannot bear one of them, you can get divorced, albeit consensually. So the type of divorce mentioned in verse 130 is a consensual one where both sides agree to get divorced.

Verses of Inheritance in Surah Nisa’

The law of inheritance is talked about the most in surah Nisa’. In fact, several verses of surah Nisa’ are dedicated to the subject of inheritance. For the sake of brevity, we will mention only one verse:

Allah enjoins you concerning your children: for the male shall be the like of the share of two females, and if there be [two or] more than two females, then for them shall be two-thirds of what he leaves; but if she be alone, then for her shall be a half; and for each of his parents a sixth of what he leaves, if he has children; but if he has no children, and his parents are his [sole] heirs, then it shall be a third for his mother; but if he has brothers, then a sixth for his mother, after [paying off] any bequest he may have made or any debt [he may have incurred]. Your parents and your children—you do not know which of them is likelier to be beneficial for you. This is an ordinance from Allah. Indeed Allah is all-knowing, all-wise.

The laws regarding inheritance is one of the most complicated rulings that have been mentioned in the Quran. Its significance is to such an extent that God Himself goes into the details of it. However, what is obvious is that the inheritance of the male is more than the female. Why? The reason is that the male needs money to support or start a family, while the female can keep everything that she receives as inheritance for herself. At the end of the day, the female is making more profit as the male has to spend the money for his wife and children.

Conclusion

Revealed in Medina, surah Nisa’ is the second longest surah in the Quran after surah Baqarah. It mostly talks about rulings that pertain to women such as marriage, inheritance, divorce, and so forth. However, there are also other verses that talk about other very important matters that pertain to one’s faith in God and belief in the Day of Judgment. God willing, by reciting this surah, we will be able to learn a lot, add to our knowledge, and receive its reward.
