Eid al-Adha, often referred to as the Festival of Sacrifice, is one of the most significant holidays in the Islamic calendar. This article delves into the essence of Eid al-Adha, its importance to the Muslim community, and what to expect as the world observes this holy day on 16th June 2024.

What is Eid al-Adha?

Eid al-Adha is the second of two Islamic holidays celebrated worldwide each year (the other being Eid al-Fitr) and considered the holier of the two. It honors the willingness of Ibrahim (Abraham) to sacrifice his son as an act of obedience to God’s command. However, before Ibrahim could sacrifice his son, God provided a ram to sacrifice instead. In commemoration of this intervention, animals are sacrificed ritually. One-third of their meat is consumed by the family offering the sacrifice, while the rest is distributed to the needy and poor.

Eid al-Adha begins with a prayer service comprising two rakats (units of prayer) performed in an open field or large hall. It is followed by a sermon, during which attendees are asked to remember the less fortunate and make charitable donations.

Post the prayer, the sacrifice of a sheep, cow, goat, buffalo, or camel takes place. This sacrifice is known as Qurbani. To capture the spirit of Eid al-Adha, it is important that the meat from the sacrifice is shared amongst family, friends, and most importantly, the underprivileged.

  • Giving gifts, particularly to children.
  • Dressing in fine clothing in celebration of the festival.
