Elisha in the Quran

0 879

Elisha in the Quran is a prophet of God who has been praised in two verses of the Noble Book of God. Elisha was the successor to Elijah whose name the Quran mentions as well. In this article, we will take a look at:

Elisha in the Quran: Surah An‘ām

The Quran mentions the name of Elisha (اليَسَع) next to the names of Ismail, Jonah, and Lot:

وَإِسْمَاعِيلَ وَالْيَسَعَ وَيُونُسَ وَلُوطًا ۚ وَكُلًّا فَضَّلْنَا عَلَى الْعَالَمِينَ ﴿86﴾

And Ishmael, Elisha, Jonah and Lot—each We graced over all the nations— 1

What God means by saying He graced them over all nations is that He made them His prophets. Prophets of God are the most superior human beings at a given time. For example, Moses was God’s best creation at his time, and Prophet Muhammad is God’s best creation of all time.

Elisha in the Quran: Surah Ṣād

The second verse of the Quran that talks about Elisha is verse 48 of surah Ṣād that reads:

وَاذْكُرْ إِسْمَاعِيلَ وَالْيَسَعَ وَذَا الْكِفْلِ ۖ وَكُلٌّ مِّنَ الْأَخْيَارِ ﴿48﴾

And remember Ishmael, Elisha and Dhu’l-Kifl —each [of whom was] among the elect. 2

Therefore, God had selected Elisha as a prophet and he was sent to guide the Children of Israel.

His Prophethood

When Elisha was young, he fell ill. He was cured with Elijah’s prayer and after that he became his disciple. After Elijah ascended the heavens, Elisha became the prophet. Based on narrations, the conditions of religion changed during his time. Ahab (آحاب), who was the king of the Israelites and inclined people to idolatry along with his wife, died. Many people during the prophethood of Elisha accepted his call. Therefore, the religion of God was revived and people began practicing it. This was reminiscent of the time of Moses and other prophets when a large group of people believed in the religion of their prophet. Elisha was one of the prophets whom people mostly obeyed.

Elisha’s Miracles

God had given Elisha some miracles like all prophets. There is a narration that he could revive the dead and could walk on water just like Jesus. 2
