Surah Maidah

0 2,776

Surah Maidah (سورةُ المائِدَة), meaning the table full of food, is the fifth surah in the Noble Quran . The reason it is called Maidah is that it relates the story of the disciples of Jesus (عيسی: ‘Īsā) who asked Allah to bring down a table full of food from heaven so that they may eat from it and be a witness to the truthfulness of their prophet. Of course, this story is told in the final verses of this surah. The other verses of this surah talk about many topics, especially those relating to belief issues.

In the name of Allah, the most compassionate, most merciful

O You Who Believe! Honor the agreements. [Eating] the animals of grazing livestock are lawful for you except that which is declared to you. You are not allowed to hunt while you are in the state of Iḥrām. Indeed, God decrees what He wills [on the basis of wisdom].

O You Who Believe! Do not violate the sanctity of the rituals of God nor [the sanctity of] the Prohibited month1, nor the marked or unmarked animal [offered to God in a sacrifice], nor [disrespect] those who come to the Sacred House seeking bounty and pleasure from their Lord, but you are allowed to hunt when you leave the state of Iḥrām. The animosity between the people who blocked you from going to Masjid al-Haram should not make you transgress [against them]. Cooperate in righteousness and piety but do not cooperate in [committing] sins and animosity, and be pious and [know that] God’s punishment is severe.

It is forbidden for you [to eat the meat of] the dead animals [which has died itself or slaughtered in non-Islamic ways, as well as], blood, pig flesh, sacrifice which has been offered to other than God, and the animal which has been strangled or beaten to death, and the animals which have died through falling from height or killed by an animal with horns or devoured by wild beast, unless that which you slaughtered in an Islamic way [before its death. It is also unlawful for you to eat] animals which have been slaughtered for [the sake of] idols or divided by; ‘diving arrows. Those are all transgression. The disbelievers are despaired [to do harm to] your religion today, therefore do not fear them, Rather hold Me in awe. Today I have perfected your religion for you and completed my Blessing on you, and I have chosen for you Islam as a religion. But, those who are compelled [by hunger to eat the mentioned unlawful things] without [intention or] inclining to transgress [will be forgiven, because] God is All-Forgiving, All-Merciful.

They ask you [to know that] what has been made lawful for them. Say “ All the good things and the prey of the hunting animal and [trained] dogs, which you have trained them [in a way] that God has taught you, are lawful for you, therefore, [you are allowed to] eat of what they catch for you and recite God’s name on it, [before sending the hunting dog to catch the prey], and be pious [because] indeed God’s reckoning is swift.1

Today all the good things [foods] have been made lawful for you, and the food of the People of the Book is lawful for you, and your food is lawful for them. And the chaste believing women, as well as the chaste women from among those who have been given the Book before you, have been made lawful for you [to marry them] if you pay their dowries [,therefore you are allowed to be with them] in a lawful way not in fornication, nor taking secret lovers. And whoever abandons belief [should know that] his work will be fruitless, and he will be of the losers in the hereafter.

O You Who Believe! When you rise to pray [make wudu2, that is,] wash your face and hands up to the elbow and wipe your head and feet up to the ankles, and if you are in the state of Jinābah, [you should] purify yourself [by doing ghusl], and if you are sick or on journey, or one of you has come from the toilet or had sexual intercourse with women, and you cannot find water, then perform tayammum with clean earth, [ that is, put your hands on the earth, then] wipe your face and hands. [You should know that] God does not will to place a burden on for you, but He wills to purify and complete His blessing on you in order that you may be thankful.

And remember God’s blessing [granted to you, and remember] His covenant which He made with you when you said “We heard and obeyed” and observe taqwā. Indeed, God knows best what exists within the hearts [and minds].

O You Who Believe! Be performers for the sake of God, [and] bear witness justly, and the hatred of the people should not make you unfair [, therefore,] be fair [because] it is closer to piety, and be pious; indeed, God knows best what you do.

God has promised the believers and those who perform good deeds that they will receive forgiveness and huge reward[s].

And those who disbelieved and denied our signs are the [permanent] settlers of the hell.

O You Who Believe! Remember God’s blessing [bestowed] upon you, when a group of people intended to stretch their hands against you [to do harm, He protected you from it, and] withheld their hands from you : and observe taqwā and [know that] the believers should trust in God.

And indeed God made a covenant with the Children of Israel and God chose among them twelve chiefs, and said “Indeed, I am with you [,so] if you perform the prayer , give zakat, believe in My messengers , help them, and lend to God the good-loan [e.g. donate for the pleasure of God], We will certainly absolve you from your evil deeds and I will admit you into the gardens through which rivers flow, therefore, whoever among you abandons belief after that, he has gone far astray from the straight path.

Because they broke their covenant, We cursed them and We hardened their hearts [because] they altered [God’s] words from their [original] state [, so attributed lies to God], and [because] they forgot most of [Our teachings] which they were reminded of, and you will not cease to hear about their treachery except a few. [Nevertheless] forgive and pardon them, indeed God loves the righteous people.

And We made a covenant with those who said “We are Christians” [; and they gave their promise to obey God’s commands], but they forgot [an important] part of what they were reminded, so We caused enmity and hatred among them [due to their own wrong deeds] until the Day of Judgment, and soon God will inform them concerning what they used to perform.

O the People of the Book! Indeed, Our messenger came to you to clarify much of the Book which you used to conceal, and excusing many. Indeed a light and a clear Book have both come to you from God.

God guides with it those who seek His pleasure to the ways of peace, and He brings them out of darkness into light with His permission1 and He guides them to a straight path.

Indeed, those who abandoned belief said “The Messiah, son of Mary, is God”; say [to the disbelievers] if God wills to destroy the Messiah son of Mary, and his mother, and everyone on earth, [then] who would have any power over God [to protect them]? “And the sovereignty of the heavens and the earth and whatever exists between them belongs to God, and God is able to do all things.

And the Jews and the Christians said, “We are God’s son and His beloved;” say [to them, If you are God’s beloved and His children,] why does He punish you for your sins? No! [You are not His children, but] you are human beings from among those He has created. He forgives whomever He wills, and punishes whomever He wills, and the sovereignty of the heavens and the earth and whatever exists between them belong to God, and [everything] returns to Him.

O the People of the Book! Indeed, our messenger has come to you to clarify [our teachings] for you after [there has been] a period of time [with no] messengers, so you cannot [pretext] saying “A bearer of good news did not come to us, nor did a warner.” So indeed a bearer of good news and a warner has come to you, and God is able to do all thing.

And when Moses said to his people, “O my people! Remember God’s favor [bestowed] upon you when He appointed among you Prophets and He made you kings, and He gave you what He had given to no other in all the world.”

O my people! Enter the Holy Land which God has assigned for you and do not go back [to previous disobedience nor disregard God’s command, otherwise] you will be losers.

They said “O Moses! There are tyrants in the land and we will not enter it unless they leave, so if they leave the land, then we will enter.”

Two men among those who hold God in awe, whom God has granted favor on, said, “Enter against them through the gate, and when you enter it you will certainly emerge victorious, and trust in Him if you are believers”.

They said “O Moses! We will never enter the land as long as they are in it, therefore, you along with your Lord go and fight them. We will sit [right] here [and wait].”

He said “O my Lord! I have power over only myself and my brother so separate us from [these] transgressing people.

He said “[Entering] this Holy Land has been forbidden to them for forty years [due to their disobedience, so] they will wander [aimlessly] about the earth [without permission to enter the holy land], therefore, do not grieve over the transgressing group.

And give them truly the news of two sons of Adam when each of them offered a sacrifice, but it was accepted from one of them[, however,] it was not accepted from the other one [, so the latter] said [to his brother]”I will kill you”[and his brother] replied, “Indeed, God accepts from the pious [who observe God’s law]”.

If you extended your hand [in oppression] to kill me, I will not extend my hand to kill you [because] I am fearful of God, [who is] the Lord of all the worlds

Indeed, I desire that you shoulder my sin with your sin, therefore, you become the dwellers of the fire. And this is the penalty of the wrongdoers.

His [tempting] soul persuaded him to kill his brother, so he [followed his worldly desires and] killed him, and thus came to be of the losers.

Then God sent a crow digging around in the earth to show him how he can hide the corpse of his brother. He said “Woe to me! Am I unable to be even like this crow, I will hide the corpse of my brother” hence, he came to be of the regretful.

Because of that We prescribed to the Children of Israel that whoever kills a person, unless [as for the guilty of] killing someone or making corruption1 in the earth, is as if he has killed all the mankind, and whoever saves the life of someone, [it is] as if he has saved the life of all mankind. Indeed, Our messengers have come to them with clear evidences, [but] even after that many of them commit excesses on the earth.

Indeed, the punishment for those who fight against God and His messengers, and strive for [causing] corruption on earth is that they should be killed or crucified, or have their hands and feet cut off on opposite sides, or they should be forced to leave the land, this is a disgrace for them in this world and they will receive a heavy punishment in the Hereafter.

Except those who repent before you arrest them, so [you should] know that God is All-Forgiving and All-Merciful.

O You Who Believe! Observe taqwā and seek the means [of approach] to Him, and strive in His path that you may prosper.

Indeed, those who disbelieve [can never avoid the divine punishment in the Hereafter, even] if they possess all that which exists on earth and the same amount with it to ransom themselves from the punishment of the Day of Judgment, it will not be accepted from them and they will receive a painful punishment.

They desire to go out of the fire but they will not [be able to] come out of it, and they will receive a lasting punishment.

And the thief, male or female, cut off their hands for what they have committed. This is an exemplary punishment which has been administered by God, and God is All-Mighty, All-Wise.

But whoever repents after his wrongdoing and reforms, so God will forgive him. Indeed, God is All-Forgiving All-Merciful.

Do you not know that the sovereignty of the heavens and the earth belongs to God? He punishes whomever He wills and forgives whomever He wills, and He is able to do all things.

O the Prophet! Do not allow those who rush to [the path of] disbelief make you grieve, the group who say, “We believe” with their mouth while their hearts do not believe, and of the Jews who listen in order to lie [against you], they listen carefully [to evilly report the news] to other people who have not come to you. They distort [God’s] words from its original state [and attributed lies to God] and say “if you are given this, accept it, but if you are not given it then beware! [And reject]1. Whomever God wills to punish, you cannot protect him against God at all. They are [the wrongdoers] whom God does not like to purify their hearts. They will be disgraced in this world and they will receive heavy punishments in the Hereafter.

They are listeners to lie [to give false reports for their masters] who mostly consume illegal earnings, so if they come to you judge between them or neglect them, and if you neglect them, they cannot harm you in any way, and if you [intend to] judge between them then judge between them justly. Indeed, God loves the just.

How would they ask you to judge [among them] while they have the Torah with themselves in which is God’s judgment, but they turned their back [and neglected it, in fact] they are not believers.

Indeed We have sent down the Torah within which is guidance and light, through which the Prophets who were submissive to God judged among the Jews, in addition to the divine scholars and rabbis, whom were entrusted with God’s book and were witness to it. Therefore, do not fear people, and hold Me in awe [and judge fairly with God’s law as did the Prophets, the rabbis and the divine scholars], and do not sell [nor disregard] my signs for a small price [of this world1. You should know that] whoever does not judge [on the basis of God’s law] which has been sent down, [in fact,] they are disbelievers.

And We prescribed for them in [the Torah, concerning the law of al- Qiṣāṣ that] a life for a life2, an eye for an eye, a nose for a nose, an ear for an ear, a tooth for a tooth, and [there are also] legal retribution for wounds. But if someone gives up [his right of al-Qiṣāṣ], it will be an atonement for him. [You should know that] whoever does not judge with what God has sent down [in fact,] they are the wrongdoers.

And after them We sent Jesus, the son of Mary, who confirmed that which had been in the Torah, and We gave him the Gospel in which was guidance and light, confirming that which had been sent down before it in the Torah, and [it was] guidance and advice for the pious.

And the believers of the Gospel should judge by what God has sent down in it, and whoever does not judge by what God has sent down, such are the transgressors.

And We have truthfully sent down to you1 the book2, it confirms the Book which had been sent down before it. [It acted as a] criterion for the book, therefore, judge between them by that which God has sent down3 and do not follow their worldly desires instead of the truth that has come to you. We have appointed a [Divine] Law and a path for each of you, if God had willed He would have forced you to be one community, but He [never forces you to choose a path because He] tests you concerning that which He has given you [to see whether you follow God’s commands or not] ,therefore, take a lead in [performing] good deeds [because] all of you will return to God, and He will inform you concerning that which you used to differ.

And judge between them by what God has sent down to you and do not follow their worldly desires, and beware of them lest they persuade you away from some of what God has sent down to you, but if they turn away [and disregard God’s law then you should] know that God wills to smite them for some of their sins, and indeed, most of the people are transgressors.

Do they seek the judgment of the Age of Ignorance [instead of the Divine accurate judgment], and who [is able to] judge better than God for those who have certain belief [in God]?

O You Who Believe! Do not take the Jews and the Christians as [your] leading friend, [because they will lead you towards the hell with their wrong tendencies and disobedience]. Some of them are leading friends of one another. And whoever among you takes them as a leader [and follows their worldly desires] is one of them [and will be resurrected with them]. Indeed God does not guide the wrongdoers.

And you see those [hypocrites] whose heart is [spiritually] sick rushing toward them [to ally themselves with the wrongdoers, because] they say, “We are fearful that misfortune may strike us [, so we ally ourselves with them]”. But [they should know that] perhaps God brings them1 a victory or command from Himself [to improve the conditions of the believers], therefore, they will be remorseful concerning that which they were concealing in their hearts.

And the believers say, “Are they [really] those who swore an oath of obedience to God that they are with you [while they violated their oath and allied themselves with the false leaders and followed their wrong policies.” Indeed,] their works have failed and they have become losers.

O You Who Believe! [You should know that] whoever abandons his religion [and give up belief], God will soon bring [instead of them] people whom He loves and they love Him. [Who are] humble toward the believers, severe against the disbelievers; they wage Jihād in God’s path and do not fear the blame of the blaming one. That is the favor of God who bestows on whomever He wills. And God is All-Gracious , All-Knowing.

Indeed, your guardian is only God, His messenger, and those who believe [and] perform prayer, give zakāt, while they bow.

And whoever takes God and His messenger and those who have faith as a guardian [ and follows them they are in God’s party, and] indeed God’s party will emerge victorious.

O You Who Believe! Do not take those who mock your religion and make fun of it, whether the ones who were given the book before you or the disbelievers, as [your] guardian, and observe taqwā if you are believers.

And when you are called to [perform] prayer, they mock and make fun of it because they are the people who do not reason.

Say ,“O the People of the Book! Do you take revenge on us only because we have believed in God and what has been sent down to us and what has been sent down before us? And indeed most of you are transgressors”

Say, “Shall I inform you about someone whose punishment is worse than that? [The wrongdoers] whom God has cursed and at whom He is wrathful, so He made them [in the form of] apes and pigs, and those who worshipped1false deities [Taghūt]. They are in the worst position and they have gone far astray from the straight path.”

And when they come to you they say, “We believe” while they had come and left with disbelief, and God knows best what they used to hide [in their hearts and minds].

And you see that many of them are heavily involved in sins2, aggression, [earning and] consuming unlawful gains. It is evil what they were doing.

Why do the scholars of divinity and rabbis not forbid them from uttering sinful words and consuming unlawful gains? It is evil what they3 were doing!

And the Jews said “God’s hand has been fastened”. May their hands be fastened; and they were cursed for what they said. No! God’s hands are open [and He is generous, so] He spends as He wills. That which has been sent down to you from your Lord certainly increases their rebellion and disbelief, and We incurred among them enmity and hatred [due to their own wrong deeds] until the Day of Judgment. Whenever they [will to] kindle a fire of war [against you] God extinguishes it. They make great effort to cause corruption on the land while God does not like those who corrupt.

And if the People of the Book had believed and been pious, We certainly would have absolved them of their sins and we would have admitted them into Gardens of blessings.

And if they had practised [the law of] the Torah and the Gospel and that which was sent down to them from their Lord, they would have consumed [provisions made for them] from above them 1and from beneath their feet2. There are a moderate group of people among them, but many of them do evil [deed].

O Prophet! Deliver to them what has been sent down to you from your Lord, and if you do not do so [it is] as if you have not delivered His message [so far and you have not done your duty as a Prophet at all]. And God will protect you against the people. Indeed, God does not guide the disbelieving people [ who pay a blind bit of notice to truth].

Say, “O People of the Book! You stand on nothing until you practice [the law of] the Torah and the Gospel and that which was sent down to you from your Lord” [, but] what was sent down to you from your Lord [only] intensified disobedient and disbelief of many of them, so do not grieve for [this] disbelieving people.

Indeed, [if] those who have[weak] faith, the Jews, the Sabaeans, the Christians, have [real] belief in God and the Last Day and perform good deeds, therefore, they will not fear and nor will they grieve.

Indeed We made a covenant with the Children of Israel and We sent down to them the messengers, but [they broke their covenant]; whenever a messenger provided them with [teachings] which they disliked, they denied some of the messengers and killed some others.

They imagined that there would not be a test, [or punishment, so] they turned a deaf ear and a blind eye [to the truth, but when they repent] then God turned to them [in mercy], however, then [many of them disregarded God’s law again,] and turned a deaf ear and a blind eye to it. Indeed, God sees best what they perform.

Indeed, those who said, “God is the Messiah, son of Mary”, disbelieved. The Messiah himself said, “O Children of Israel, worship God [who is] my Lord and your Lord. [You should know that] God forbids paradise for whomever ascribes partners to Him, and their abode is fire, and the wrongdoer will have no helper.”

Indeed, those who said “God is the third of three” certainly disbelieved. And there is no God but one god. If they do not give up what they are saying [, therefore,] those who disbelieved from among them will receive a painful punishment.

Will they not repent to God and pray for His forgiveness? [Indeed,] God is All-Forgiving, All-Merciful.

The Messiah son of Mary is only a messenger [of God and His servant], the like of whom has passed away before, and his mother was a truthful woman. [They were both human being, and] they ate food [as other people do, so they are not God]. Look [to see] how We clarify our signs to them and see how they [disregard Our signs and] turn away.

Say [to the disbelievers], “Do you worship instead of God [idols] which cannot cause you any harm nor provide you any benefit? while God is All-Hearing, All-Knowing.”

Say, O People of the Book, “Do not exaggerate wrongfully concerning your religion, and do not follow the desires of a people who went astray before, and led many people astray, and they have gone astray from the straight path”.

Those who disbelieved from among the Children of Israel were cursed by David, and by Jesus the son of Mary, because they disobeyed [God] and they were transgressing.

They did not prevent one another from wrong deeds which they committed. Indeed it is evil what they used to commit.

You see many of them allied themselves with disbelievers. It is evil what they [committed, and] sent ahead, so God is wrathful at them and they will be in punishment forever.

And if they had believed in God, the messenger, and what has been sent down to him, and they had not chosen the disbelievers as their masters, [they could have been guided], but many of them are transgressors.

You certainly find that the extremist people in hostility towards the believers are the Jews and those who ascribed partners to God, and you find the [Christians] more affectionate to the believers who said, “We are Christians” Because there are priests and monks among them [who invite them to the straight path] and they do not show arrogance.

And when they hear what has been sent down to the Prophet, you find their eyes brim with tears due to what they see of the truth, and they say, “

And why should we not believe in God and what has come to us of truth, while we are hopeful that He will admit us [ into paradise] with the righteous.

And God has rewarded them with gardens through which rivers flow; they will live therein forever. That is the reward of the righteous.

And those who abandoned belief and denied Our signs, they are the dwellers of hell.

O You Who Believe! Do not forbid the good things that God has made lawful for you, and do not transgress, indeed God does not like the transgressors.

And eat of what God has provided you, the lawful and the good. And fear God in whom you believe.

God will not call you to account for [breaking] your unintentional oath, but He will bring you to account for breaking the oath which you have taken intentionally, so for its atonement, you should feed ten needy with the average food you provide your family with, or cloth them or set a slave free, and whoever can do none of these cases should fast for three days. This is the atonement for your oath [if you break it], therefore, honor your oath. Thus God clarifies for you His signs in order that you may give thanks [and observe His law].

O You Who Believe! Indeed, wine, gambling, idols, and diving arrows1 are evil and of Satan’s act; therefore, leave them aside in order that you may prosper.

Indeed, Satan desires to incur enmity and hatred between you through wine and gambling, and he desires to prevent you from God’s remembrance and prayer, yet will you, then give [them] up?

And obey God and obey the messenger and beware of [disobedience]. If you turn away [and disregard Him, you will lose yourselves]. Because the duty of Our messengers is only to deliver [God’s message] in clear words.

Those who believe and perform good deeds are not sinful [if]they may have consumed [before this command, so] if they be pious, believe then do good deeds, then be pious and have faith. Indeed, God loves the righteous.

O You Who Believe! [when you are in the state of Iḥrām in hajj],God will certainly test you about the matter of the hunt which you [can easily] take with your hands and spears, [so] that God makes known that who is fearful of Him in secret, so whoever transgresses after that, he will receive a severe punishment.

O You Who Believe! kill no prey while you are in the state of Iḥrām, and whoever of you kills it intentionally [must pay] its atonement which is a cattle [which] is an equivalent to the animal that he has killed, specified by two just men among you. [This cattle] should be taken towards the K‘aba [in Mecca] as a sacrificial offering. Or the atonement [of this wrong deed is] feeding the needy or fasting equivalent to it. [Because] he should receive the consequences of his wrong deed. God has forgiven whatever has happened in the past, but whoever commits it again God will take vengeance on him. Indeed, God is the All –Mighty, the Vengeful.

[ The hunt of the sea and its food is lawful for you and a provision for you and your caravan, but it is unlawful for you to hunt on the land as long as you are in the state of Iḥrām. And fear God to whom you will be resurrected.

God has made the K‘aba the Sacred House, to conduct people’s affairs, and the Sacred Month and the offerings and the garlands [have been made of His creed] in order that you may know that indeed God knows what exists in the heaven and what exists in the earth, and He knows all things.

Know that God’s punishment is severe and indeed He is AllForgiving and All-Merciful.

The duty of the messenger is only to deliver [God’s message in clear words], and God knows what you disclose and what you conceal.

Say bad and good are not equal, even if the abundance of bad impresses you. O the Wise! Be pious, in order that you may prosper.

O You Who Believe! Do not ask about [the matters] which if they are revealed to you, they will upset you; and if you ask concerning it while the Qur’ān is being sent down, they will be revealed to you. God forgave it and God is All-Forgiving

Indeed, a group of people asked such questions in the past but then they disbelieved in them.

God has not established any such thing as baḥīrah, or sāʾibah, or waṣīlah, or ḥām, but those who disbelieve express lies against God, and most of them do not use reason.

And when they were told “Come to [follow] what God has sent down and the messenger”, they [rejected] replying “It is enough for us [to follow] the path of our forefathers.” [Hence ask them will they do so] even [if] their forefathers did not know anything and they were not guided!

O You Who Believe! Care for your soul; those who have gone astray cannot harm you if you are guided. [Know that] all of you will return to God, then He will inform you about what you used to do.

O You Who Believe! [This is a law about] a witness between you when death comes to one of you. Two just men from among you at the time of bequest should act as witnesses, or two other men [should do so] if you travel in the land [and cannot find two men from yourselves and suddenly the] disaster of death comes to you ,[therefore], if you doubt [whether the other two men will give true testimony or not you can] keep them after prayer to swear by God [that] we will not give false testimony even if it were a near relative and we will not conceal God’s testimony, [because] if we do so, we will certainly be sinful.”

If it is discovered that those [who testified] are sinful [and they have lied], therefore, two other [witnesses] of those concerned should come in their place, so those two [new] witnesses should swear by God [saying that] indeed our testimony is truer than their testimony and we have not transgressed, [because if we do so] we will certainly be wrongdoers.

That [mentioned way] is more likely that they give a reliable testimony as it should be given or that they may fear another oath is taken after their oath [and their lies to be discovered]. Observe taqwā and listen [and know that] God does not guide the transgressors.

Historical Accounts in Surah Maidah

One of the characteristics of this surah is that it tells stories of the past that we can learn many lessons from them. For example, surah Maidah talks about:

  • The covenant of Bani Israel (Children of Israel:
  • Bewilderment of Bani Israel
  • The story of Abel (هابيل) and Cain (قابيل). (The sons of prophet Adam)
  • The birth, prophethood, and miracles of Jesus
  • Descent of a table of food for Jesus and his disciples

The Covenant of Bani Israel

And indeed God made a covenant with the Children of Israel and God chose among them twelve chiefs, and said “Indeed, I am with you, [so] if you perform the prayer, give zakat, believe in My messengers, help them, and lend to God the good-loan [e.g. donate for the pleasure of God], We will certainly absolve you from your evil deeds and I will admit you into the gardens through which rivers flow, therefore, whoever among you abandons belief after that, he has gone far astray from the straight path. 3

Allah had made many covenants with Bani Israel. This covenant is probably the most comprehensive one. It contains all the things that must be believed in and done such as performing prayer, giving alms, believing in Allah’s messengers, and so on. However, many of the Bani Israel broke their covenant with Allah and did very evil things such as distorting and altering the Torah and practicing usury.

Bewilderment of Bani Israel

Bani Israel, specifically the people of Moses, used to bother and disobey Moses very much. They were told to go to the sacred place in Palestine and fight and defeat the polytheists there to live there and enjoy the Divine blessings of God. However, they said:

They said, ‘O Moses, there are a tyrannical people in it. We will not enter it until they leave it. But once they leave it, we will go in.’ 4

They were too cowardly to go and enter the city in order to fight the belligerents. The faithful among them said, “Enter against them through the gate, and when you enter it you will certainly emerge victorious, and trust in Him if you are believers.” 5

However, the weak ones among them said to Moses:

They said “O Moses! We will never enter the land as long as they are in it, therefore, you along with your Lord go and fight them. We will sit [right] here [and wait].”

Moses Curses Bani Israel

Moses was left helpless as he had no one to aid him except his brother. Of course, Allah was with him. However, Allah has said that he will not change the fate of a nation until they change it themselves. 6 This is a sunnah (سُنَّة) or precedent of Allah. Therefore, Moses said:

He said “O my Lord! I have power over only myself and my brother so separate us from [these] transgressing people. 7

Consequently, Allah answered Moses’ prayer and said:

He said “[Entering] this Holy Land has been forbidden to them for forty years [due to their disobedience, so] they will wander [aimlessly] about the earth [without permission to enter the holy land], therefore, do not grieve over the transgressing group. 8

As a result, Bani Israel were banned by Allah from entering the holy land of Jerusalem for forty years due to their disobedience to their prophet. This punishment might seem very severe, but one must consider how much Allah supported them and miraculously saved them from the Pharaoh and even promised them to help them defeat their enemies in the holy land. Nevertheless, their weak faith in Allah and his prophet caused them to suffer.

The Story of Abel and Cain

Abel (هابيل) and Cain (قابيل) were the first two sons of Adam and Eve. One of them had to be the successor to and prophet after Adam. Therefore, Allah tested them to see who is worthier of this position. The Quran relates the story as such:

And give them truly the news of two sons of Adam when each of them offered a sacrifice, but it was accepted from one of them[, however,] it was not accepted from the other one [, so the latter] said, [to his brother] “I will kill you”[and his brother] replied, “Indeed, God accepts from the pious [who observe God’s law].” 9

It is said in the narrations and tafāsīr that Abel was the one whom Allah accepted his sacrifice. Abel who was a shepherd, sacrificed his best sheep and offered it to Allah, while Cain who was a farmer, offered the worst part of his crops. Allah accepted Abel’s sacrifice and chose him as his father’s successor. Cain became extremely jealous of his brother and said, “Surely, I will kill you.” Abel said, “Allah only accepts the offerings of the Godwary and pious.”

Abel’s Piety and Fear of Allah

So Cain threatened to kill Abel. However, Abel said that even if you try to kill me, I will not fight back and try to kill you, because I fear the Lord of the worlds. Then he said:

Indeed, I desire that you shoulder my sin with your sin, therefore, you become the dwellers of the fire. And this is the penalty of the wrongdoers 1

Cain was tempted by Satan to follow his selfish desire and kill his brother. And, that is exactly what he did:

His [tempting] soul persuaded him to kill his brother, so he [followed his worldly desires and] killed him, and thus came to be of the losers. 11

Cain Does not Know What to Do With Abel’s Corpse

So Cain killed his brother, but he did not know what to do with his dead body. Should he have left it so that everyone would know that someone has killed him, or left his body to rot? Therefore, Allah sent a crow that taught him what to do:

Then God sent a crow digging around in the earth to show him how he can hide the corpse of his brother. He said “Woe to me! Am I unable to be even like this crow, I will hide the corpse of my brother” hence, he came to be of the regretful. 12

Then Allah prescribed the following law for Bani Israel:

Because of that We prescribed to the Children of Israel that whoever kills a person, unless [as for the guilty of] killing someone or making corruption in the earth, is as if he has killed all the mankind, and whoever saves the life of someone, [it is] as if he has saved the life of all mankind. Indeed, Our messengers have come to them with clear evidences, [but] even after that many of them commit excesses on the earth. 13

Therefore, in all Abrahamic religions including Islam, killing one single person is tantamount to killing mankind in its entirety, while saving the life of one person is saving the life of the whole of mankind.

The Birth, Prophethood, and Miracles of Jesus

Jesus was one of the great prophets of Allah and the penultimate ulū al-aẓm (اولو العظم ) prophet, meaning a prophet who has a sharia and has to be followed by all the people of the world. Jesus had many miracles that are mentioned in the Quran. In fact, his birth was a miracle as he was born without a father from his pure and chaste mother Mary.

The Quran mentions the miracles of Jesus in the following verse:

When God said, “O Jesus, son of Mary! Remember My favor [bestowed] on you and on your mother [including] when I [helped and] strengthened you through the Holy Spirit, so you spoke to the people from [your] cradle [to prove your truthfulness] and [I helped you ] in maturity [to deliver God’s message], and I taught you the Book, wisdom, the Torah and the Gospel, and [as I helped you] when you made [statue] from clay in the form of a bird with My permission, then you blew on it and it became a [real] bird with My permission, and [remember when I helped you to] heal those who were born blind and the leper with My permission, and you could revive the dead with My permission, and [remember] when I prevented the Children of Israel from harming you when you provided them with clear evidences while those who disbelieved from among them [wrongfully denied and ] said, ‘This is only a clear magic.’ ” 14

The Heavenly Table in Surah Maidah

There is a story in surah Maidah of the disciples of Jesus asking him to send a heavenly table for them so that they become certain of his truthfulness. The verses about this incident are as follows:

And when the disciples said [to] Jesus, son of Mary, “Is your Lord able to send down for us a table full of food from heaven?” He answered, “observe taqwā if you are believers.”

They said, “We want to eat from it that our heart may be reassured, and that we may know that you have spoken truly to us, and that we may be witness to it[’s truthfulness]”

Jesus son of Mary, said, “O our Lord! Send down for us a table full of food from heaven to be a feast for our first and last [i.e. all of us, and that it may be] a sign from you, and provide us, indeed you are the best Provider.”

God said, “Indeed I will send it down to you, but if any one among you abandons belief afterwards, I will punish him severely such as I have not punished anyone [so far].” 15

It is interesting that the naming of this surah, that is, Maidah meaning table full of food, is a direct reference to this event.

Famous Verses of Surah Maidah

There are several famous verses in this surah including the verses of:

  • Completion of religion (اکمال الدین)
  • Means (وَسيلَة)
  • Wilayah (وِلايَة)
  • Wudu (وُضُو)

The Verse of Completion of Religion in Surah Maidah

The religion of Islam was completed and all the laws and rulings were finalized shortly after the farewell and only hajj of the Prophet in Mecca in the year 10 AH. An event took place that completed Allah’s religion, that is, the appointment of the Prophet’s successor. To find out more about this event, read the article Ghadir in the Quran.

The verse that was revealed on that occasion was the final verse Allah revealed to the Prophet. It reads:

Today I have perfected your religion for you and completed my Blessing on you, and I have chosen for you Islam as a religion. 16

Verse of Means in Surah Maidah

Allah says in the Quran:

O You Who Believe! Observe taqwā and seek the means [of approach] to Him, and strive in His path that you may prosper.

One of the sunnahs and precedents of Allah in the universe is carrying out His actions through different means. Of course, sometimes He directly performs certain actions. However, on the most part, He carries out His actions through different means. Moreover, He Himself has asked us to resort to these means to fulfill our needs. For example, he has provided us with food so that by eating it we gain strength to perform other tasks whether worldly or spiritual ones.

Allah has also asked us to resort to the Prophet and his rightful successors as means for seeking forgiveness of our sins and also fulfilling our wishes and requests from Allah. This is in no way shirk or polytheism as some radical, so called Muslims interpret. The Quran itself approves this by the verse of wasīlah that means, intermediary or means.

Verse of Wilayah in Surah Maidah

Wilayah is a very important belief and concept in Islam. Whoever does not accept the wilayah of Allah’s appointed guardians has not truly believed in Allah and his deeds will not be accepted by Him. One must obey the guardians or walis of Allah, first and foremost, Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him and his progeny, and then his rightful successors. A verse of the Quran in surah Maidah emphasizes this fact:

Indeed, your guardian is only God, His messenger, and those who believe [and] perform prayer, give zakāt, while they bow. 17

As for the occasion of revelation of this verse, it was Ali ibn Abi Talib (علي ابن ابي طالب) who gave his ring to a beggar in the mosque while he was bowing down in his prayer (i.e. in rukū‘). Therefore, Allah in this verse is indirectly saying that Ali is the guardian and wali of all Muslims directly after the Noble Prophet.

The Verse of Wudu in Surah Maidah

One of the Islamic rulings that has been mentioned in detail in the Quran and in surah Maidah is the ruling regarding wudu. Wudu is a very important act that is a preliminary for prayers (salat). Without wudu, one cannot perform prayer. That is why Allah has mentioned the details of making wudu in surah Maidah verse six. The verse reads:

O You Who Believe! When you rise to pray [make wudu, that is,] wash your face and hands up to the elbow and wipe your head and feet up to the ankles. 18

Conclusion

Surah Maidah is one of the long surahs of the Quran that contains many important Islamic concepts pertaining to belief issues as well as Islamic laws. It also gives instructive historical accounts such as the story of Moses and Bani Israel, Abel and Cain, and Jesus and his miracles and the descent of the heavenly table of food. This surah also talks about the important concept of wilayah, the completion of religion by appointment of the Prophet’s successor (i.e. Ali), and others. Finally, reciting this surah has many great benefits. God willing, by reciting this surah we will reap its benefits.
